Book Description

Victoria and Albert Museum Studies June 1, 2001
Celebrating the marriage of word and image on the written and printed page, The Art of the Book presents rarely examined treasures from the National Art Library at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Featuring a huge range of material spanning six centuries—including illuminated manuscripts, fine bindings, the classics of children’s literature, comic novels, and artists’ books, it explores the ways in which books not only transmit information but become works of art in their own right.

Thematic sections illustrate the key aspects of book design and production over the ages. With medieval books of hours sitting alongside contemporary paperback novels, the choice of artists, designers, subjects, and authors is wonderfully varied—from Leonardo da Vinci to Sir Eduardo Paolozzi, Aesop to Charles Dickens, and de Brunhoff’s Babar the Elephant to Art Spiegelman’s Maus. Strikingly illustrated with 100 colorplates, this absorbing compendium will be of interest to collectors, graphic designers, and booklovers.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School-This collection maintained and organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum is presented in chronological order from medieval manuscripts through illustrated 19th-century periodicals and novels and children's books to modern comic books and graphic novels. Divided by format (e.g., "Illumination," "Bindings," "Documentary Manuscripts," "Poetry and Experimental Typography"), each section offers about 10 examples in the form of full-page color plates, each faced by detailed discussion of the technology, purpose, and practitioner who yielded the reproduced work. Budding as well as accomplished artists will cherish this history of illustration; readers who have no artistic talents will, nonetheless, better understand how books have evolved as aspects of material culture. The text is technical but accessible and the amount of information about the role of print material in Western culture is elucidating. The reproduction quality is excellent, making this a feast for the eye as well as the mind. This book has a place in several areas of school curricula as well as in the personal lives of many youth.

From Library Journal

With the book more and more considered an endangered species, it is heartening to read that "for the foreseeable future at least, as long as art is made there will be books published to promote and explain its meanings." This compendium offers a glimpse into the depth of the holdings of the National Art Library (NAL) at London's Victoria & Albert Museum, whose objectives are to collect the book as object, serve as a repository of art publications, and provide research material to the museum staff. Bettley, former head of collection development at the NAL, traces developments in the book arts from illumination and calligraphy to printing and photography. A chapter on bindings reveals a great variety, from jeweled to paperback, and one on documentary manuscripts offers examples from da Vinci, Swift, and others. The library's holdings in children's books, as well as in comic books and graphic novels, continue to grow in international scope. Illustrated with 100 color plates; highly recommended for all art, academic, and large public collections. Paula Frosch, Metropolitan Museum of Art Lib., New York

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Resource, January 3, 2004
This review is from: Art of the Book: From Medieval Manuscript to Graphic Novel (Victoria and Albert Museum Studies) (Hardcover)
This book is a beautiful compilation put together by the former head of Special Collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Beginning with the illuminated manuscripts of medieval times, he traces the history of illustration and book decoration throughout the centuries. The design and layout of the book are also discussed in the chapters about bookbinding and typography. Not only does he address the amazing history of book illustration, but opens the door to the future of art and book design. Comics and graphic novels are given equal face time as the historical manuscripts, as is the experimental art scene in present-day Britain (posters, zines, etc.)

Each chapter includes a one-page essay on a certain illustration or design, or about the history of that medium. The essays are particularly well-written. My favorites among these essays included Ian Fleming's Bond books and the birth of the paperback, the descriptions on the medieval Book of Hours, and the illustrations of the fairy stories.

Beautiful book, and an amazing piece of scholarship.
