Book Description

September 2000
Containing information on 730 museums and galleries, Art on Campus is the only comprehensive source for information on art venues at American colleges and universities. Employing a consistent, easy-to-use format with no confusing abbreviations, the Guide is designed to assist the reader in making informed decisions as to which institutions to visit. Listings are organized alphabetically by state/city/academic institution-venue name. Each entry contains all necessary basic information (location, telephone numbers, web site addresses, hours, fees, tours, access for the disabled, parking availability, food services, etc.), as well as descriptions of holdings, types of temporary exhibitions, and facilities (often supplemented by an illustration of an object from its collection or a photograph of the site). As a further aid in planning excursions, museum locator maps are provided for each state and several metropolitan areas. The index is fully cross-referenced to allow searches by college name, museum/gallery name, and acronym or popular name. Sponsored by the College Art Association, a member of the American Council of Learned Societies, the Guide is also intended to serve as the official directory of CAA member facilities.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A wonderful way to discover hidden treasures around the Country." -- Douglas G. Schultz, Director, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo

"The hundreds of college and university museums and exhibition galleries, housing countless works of art, are a distinctive American phenomenon. Art on Campus is the first comprehensive guide to them. With maps, descriptions, and timely facts, this beautifully produced guidebook should be in every art-lover's glove compartment or suitcase." -- John Walsh, Director, The J. Paul Getty Museum

"This directory fills an important void for students, museum professionals, academics, and trip planners, and should prove extremely useful for these and other readers." -- Maxwell Anderson, Director, Whitney Museum of American Art

From the Publisher

Where are Joan Miro's fourteen hundred square-foot glass and marble mural, "Personnages Oiseaux", Rembrandt's "Head of Christ", Rouault's "Last Romantic", Bellows's "Men of the Docks", and Diebenkorn's "Girl on a Terrace"? The Metropolitan Museum of Art? The J. Paul Getty Museum? The Whitney? The National Gallery? Actually, these masterworks are all to be found in the collections of academic institutions, respectively, at Wichita State University, Bob Jones University, La Salle University, Randolph Macon Woman's College, and SUNY, Purchase.

With so many Americans interested in viewing fine art, why do relatively few avail themselves of the treasures to be found in America's college and university museums and galleries? Quite simply, fewer people are aware of these venues, particularly outside their immediate locality, and even if they are aware of them, crucial information about their locations, holdings, hours, and accessibility is often not readily obtainable.

With the publication of Art on Campus for the first time a comprehensive source of information on these often exceptional museums, collections, and galleries is available to art lovers in one portable volume. Sponsored by the College Art Association, a member of the American Council of Learned Societies, the Guide is also intended to serve as the official directory of CAA member facilities.

Art on Campus is neither a coffee table art book nor a periodical guide to temporary art exhibitions. Rather, it is intended to assist the art lover in planning more productive and enjoyable excursions by providing essential information on institutions, their collections, and activities. Employing a consistent, easy-to-use format with no confusing abbreviations, it is unique in its scope, focusing on 730 college and university sites in 440 pages. No other source contains detailed information on so many institutions. The holdings and types of temporary exhibitions at each institution are noted with particularity, as are, moreover, attendance figures, number and size of galleries, and number of objects in the permanent collection. These facts, along with 231 illustrations of facilities or objects in their collections, enable the reader to make qualitative and quantitative judgments about the museums and galleries. If the reader decides to visit, the fifty-seven state and metropolitan maps provide invaluable logistic assistance. Also included is a list of thirty-two lesser-known, but intriguing, venues that have caught the attention of the editors.

This guide is a beautifully put together resourse for all art lovers, students and museum professionals. It is extremely clear and easy to use. I found wonderful places to visit in my own backyard that I wasn't even aware of previously. I also can't wait to take my next trip to another part of the country and visit these wonderful museums! The guide is a real inspiration to get up and out to all of these great institutions.
