Biography

The Orb are an English electronic music group known for spawning the genre of ambient house. Founded in 1988 by Alex Paterson and KLF member Jimmy Cauty, The Orb began as ambient and dub DJs in London. Their early performances were inspired by ambient and electronic artists of the 1970s and 1980s, most notably Brian Eno and Kraftwerk. Because of their "trippy" sound, The Orb developed a cult… Read more in Amazon's The Orb Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent new ambient Orb and other notables..., November 14, 2007
This review is from: Art of Chill 4 (Audio CD)
This is a compilation of various artists- some well known and others; not so well known. But the entire 2 disk set is nice to chill out too. Alex includes a Penguin Cafe Orchestra tune here (the "Sound of Someone You Love...")- a very pleasant suprise since I used to chill to this album in high school (~1984). Alex pulls in his past (working with EG records), and finally, has some interaction with Brian Eno with a 2004 digital remaster of "Taking Tiger Mountain." I've always wished for a collaborative album with Alex and Eno. David Bowie makes an appearance with an unusual track. But what really stands out is the Orb's own tunes. "Codes" has to be one of the better Orb tunes in the new Mellinium. "Inside River" by KaitO is also a stand out. Nice to hear from Fehlman - "With Oil" is a keeper. Steve Hillage and Mad Professor? It's an all-out Orb trip fest chill trip! As in: "chilly-chil-chillin'"

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Relaxing Mix..., November 9, 2007

Liked it. A great album to put on and play. Good background music and relaxing to listen to. If you are into the Art of Chill series then you will like this addition.

Over the last six or seven years, the marketing of mix albums by certain artists has increased (eg. Back to Mine series). I think it is interesting to listen to a serving of good music that some of my favorite artists have prepared. Most people don't like albums as such becasue they are looking for new material by the featured artist. Others like it becasue they understand that this is not an album to promote new material, but to provide great listening pleasure.

Enjoy.
