Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

If you're tired of making "recipe" quilts that simply duplicate what someone else has designed, and you're ready to take charge of planning your own quilts, you'll find the help you need in this excellent reference. Overflowing with solid, practical advice on equipment, fabrics, cutting, basic quilt-block settings, yardage calculation, piecing strategies, even setting up a wonderful workspace, The Art of Classic Quiltmaking aims to allay the trepidations of quilters who long to expand control over their quilting endeavors. With lucid text, hundreds of clear diagrams, and lovely color photos of both antique quilts and their own work, the authors demystify such intimidating concepts as drafting your own patterns, reducing what many quilters fear is a complex mathematical exercise into a more approachable series of simple calculations. Although the authors provide no step-by-step projects (this would, after all, defeat their stated purpose to teach quilters to think for themselves), they do offer detailed explanations on constructing several basic patterns, set-in and curved-seam piecing, quilting the completed product, and finishing techniques. In other words, if you've got a bit of quilt-making experience and want to make a more personal statement with your creations, this volume will show you how to go from raw material to a finished quilt you can be truly proud of. --Amy Handy --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

More About the Author

Harriet started quilting seriously in 1974, working alongside her mom. Her early quilting career included producing baby quilts for craft shows and teaching adult education classes. In 1981, harriet opened her quilt shop, Harriet's Treadle Arts. Her specialties at the time were free-motion embroidery, machine arts, and machine quilting. In 1982, Harriet attended one of Mary Ellen Hopkins's seminars. Mary Ellen's streamlined techniques and innovative design ideas led harriet to a new way of thinking, which caused her to give up the machine arts and to teach only quilting. Today, she is world renowned for being a true "mover and shaker" in the quilt world. In the late 1990s, she was voted one of the "88 Leaders of the Quilt World." Harriet created and inspired a whole new generation of machine quilters with her bestselling book Heirloom Machine Quilting, which has enjoyed 22 continuous years in print. She is also the author of Mastering Machine Appliqué and From Fiber to Fabric, and co-author of The Art of Classic Quiltmaking. She is responsible for a myriad of products pertaining to machine quilting, and she has developed batting with hobbs Bonded fibers and designed fabric for P&B Textiles. 5.0 out of 5 stars The Art of Classic Quiltmaking, June 28, 2000

This is a beautiful quilt book, one of the best in recent years.

The book is an exceptional reference book, as it includes information on fabric selection and preparation, tools and equipment, fabric cutting, calculating yardage, the types of settings for quilt blocks and how to achieve them, and the basics of the primary piecing techniques used by modern quilters. And, that is only the tip of the iceberg.

There is one caveat though, this is not a pattern book. While the book includes dozens of pictures of gorgeous quilts, the book does not come with detailed instructions on how to reproduce most of them. You have to figure it out for yourself.

Although the book can teach you how to draft blocks and calculate yardage for whatever size quilt you choose to make, making most of the quilts in this book might be more than most beginning quilters can handle.

Nonetheless, whether you're a beginner or have years of experience, if you're a quilter, this book is well worth the investment. Any quilter would be well served by reading the book from cover to cover.

I got this book as a surprise and I am so glad I did. I am a new quilter and everything I have wanted to look up has been in this book. It has so much useful information and is organized very well. This book would even be good for an advanced quilter because it contains the simplest to most complex techniques and instructions on how to do things. A must have for every quilters home library.
