On the Art of Collage,
By Nicholas Follansbee (Ashland, Oregon, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Art of Collage (Hardcover)
Published in 1978, this 176-page hardbound book contains 260 illustrations, of which 52 are in color. The book's purpose, to generate ideas and present the widest possible range of work and techniques, is effectively realized by a writer and artist whose many years of teaching are reflected in the text. Most of the work shown dates from the late 1960s to the date of publication and includes both student and professional pieces, generally of high quality. 74 artists living at the time are represented, some of whom were well-known in 1978 and remain so. The history of the medium is only briefly sketched, and one complaint is that earlier work is under-represented. Intended for an art-education market, cost considerations no doubt dictated that most of the illustrations be black and white, which is unfortunate, particularly since many of the pieces appear to be quite rich and would surely be that much more impressive in color. Despite these limitations, this is a book that anyone interested in collage would do well to acquire.
