5.0 out of 5 stars An informative and fun read!!!
As an acting teacher, I have suugested my students struggling with understanding comedy, buy this book. It's current, easy, fun, funny and will give you a step by step guide on how to be funny, how to understand funny and how to recognize funny. The exercises are very helpful. A must read if you have any interest in getting into comedy as a performer.

If you are a stand-up wanting to get a book to help you in the craft - this is not the book for you!

You would be much better off buying Ajaye's "Comic Insights" or Carter's "Comedy Bible" and watching a lot of comedy.

This book is more for comic theatre actors, and then it is not much chop. The end.

This is one of the finest books I've read for anyone aspiring to
comedy acting in movies and on TV and the live stage. It's packed
with insider tips and practical wisdom harvested by comedy-meister
Paul Ryan during his impressive career as Hollywood's "comedy coach.".
To thoroughly grasp these great techniques and make them
your own, it would be best to practice them in a workshop situation.
(Having observed these techniques in action with Paul's exercises
at a SAG Conservatory workshop, I know that they work!)
"The Art of Comedy" could also be well-used as a solid resource for
classes offered by community theaters and for college acting courses.

Okay, so you want to know how to be funny? Take my advice and get this book! So many helpful hints and words of wisdom from someone who has spent his life in the business and knows what he's talking about. I've seen him speak at a couple of lectures in Hollywood and he really has some sound and helpful advice on the art of comedy. His hands on approach had everyone up and moving in the room and by the end of the class we all felt more funny!

5.0 out of 5 stars What an Amazing Book...., November 15, 2007
This review is from: The Art of Comedy: Getting Serious About Being Funny (Paperback)
As an aspiring actor Paul's Book has opened my eyes to so many fun and interesting acting techniques I never knew about. I've been studying acting for years and this is the first of the many books I've read that has made learning comedy fun and simple yet at the same time has stretch my abilities which has forced me to explore many new avenues in my career. I recommend this book to all types of actors. Its always good to explore the various realms of acting, whether you be a comedic or dramatic actor.
