Book Description

Holidays for couples can be tough enough ... what about long-term travel for couples? Trips that last months or years with the person who you most love ... and who most drives you up the wall!

Authors Craig and Linda Martin have been travelling full-time for the last five years. They can help you plan and enjoy your travels as a couple, and come out the other side having had the trip of a lifetime.

The Art of Couples' Travel, the premier book for couples planning long-term travel, isn't a listing of couples' resorts and weekend getaways, it's a guidebook to help you plan an extended itinerary, save towards the trip, then manage your emotions, itinerary and money while on the road.

Helping you to come to an agreement on where to go, and what to do; how to fund it, and how to make it happen.

All the practical nitty-gritty of itinerary planning, budgeting, negotiating and ensuring you're not screaming at each other while you do so!

Planning an extended trip can be tricky. You get walked through all the things that must be done, from finding accommodation to downsizing your possessions to questions to ask about your travel insurance.

You're going to have a ball on this trip, but there's also times you'll disagree. How do you make changes on the road to deal with sicknesses, changing attitudes or running out of cash?

Guest authors Jessica Ainley and Daniela Heinrich talk specifically to gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transexual travel lovers about the cultural and legal prejudices you will find on the road, some unexpected issues, and how to best deal with them.

How on earth do you get ready to go home after all of this? And what will you do with all those photos?! You'll find ways to make a graceful re-entry and learn the truth about how reverse culture shock might effect you both.

Three appendices cover further reading to inspire your travels, countries where lesbian and gay relationships are illegal or proscribed, and specialist travel planning resources for LGBT couples.

Reviews for Art of Couples' Travel

"Art of Couples' Travel is extremely useful. I wish I had something similar when we began planning for our trip! The gadgets and insurance section were especially helpful to us since we still need to figure out those things before we leave on our travels."
~ Kim, So Many Places

"We took our first extended travel in 2000. We had some of the biggest fights of our lives during that trip, but we came home with a stronger bond than we had in the 9 years of our relationship leading up to it. Nothing makes a relationship stronger than sharing a life changing experience like reaching the summit of a mountain or visiting an orphanage in a remote village."
~ Dave Bouskill

"Traveling happily as a couple is an art form. Craig and Linda have put together a great primer for couples thinking about making travel dreams a reality. It's loaded with great no-nonsense advice from a couple that's been there and survived to tell the story!"
~Danny and Jillian, I Should Log Off

"What I love about The Art of Couples Travel is that there is no sugar coating. Craig and Linda tell it like it is and provide you with useful, honest and practical ways to travel as a couple. Their honesty is refreshing as they show other couples that long term travel is a realistic (and amazing) lifestyle. Their love of travel is infectious and they are eager to share it with everyone."
~ Ant and Elise, Positive World Travel

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Recourse for Couples Travel July 19, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
If you are thinking of traveling the world with your partner, this is an excellent book to read. Traveling as a couple can be more challenging than you think and there is a lot of planning, organizing and discussion involved to making it a success. The Art of Couples' Travel gives you the tools you need to make the most out of your journey. It provides money saving tips, voluntourism ideas, what you can expect on the road and a valuable list of other couples that are out there right now traveling for extended periods of time. My husband and I have been traveling together for several years and we even found some new and insightful information to put to use for ourselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great resource for traveling couples July 17, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I loved this book. And as a couples' travel blogger, I don't say this lightly.

With humor and an easy, flowing style, it covers all the questions I would have about why to take time away from regularly-scheduled life, how to prepare for and afford extended travel, how to manage disagreements/knock-down arguments on the road, and how to make sure both traveler's needs are met. I especially enjoyed the suggestions for how to re-enter your daily life with grace and a spirit of reconnection; the come-down from a journey can be very difficult and providing a game plan is a brilliant move.

The resources for finding both free and paid volunteer work are some of the best I've seen, and it's rare to find such comprehensive travel tips geared towards LGBT couples. In addition, the book features a truly poignant list of countries where LGBT relationships are illegal, which could either inspire a travel challenge or help a couple avoid potential hostility.

If you're both toying with the idea of taking a long-term trip together and are feeling a bit lost as where to begin -- or even where to go -- I'd suggest The Art of Couples' Travel (and your couch at home, with some wine) as the right place to start.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical advice for couples planning a big trip July 14, 2011
By Erin
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a comprehensive guide providing practical advice for couples planning to travel long term. It's ideal for first time travellers as it takes you through all the basics including coming up with an itinerary (that suits you both),budgeting, insurance, packing and lots more. The authors are honest that travelling as a couple isn't always easy and give some great tips on avoiding arguments on the road.

I also really liked the section aimed at LGBT couples which discusses the specific issues they face but are often not talked about.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Book For Couples' Wanting To Travel July 12, 2011
By Anthony
Format:Kindle Edition
Even though I have been in a relationship for 5 years and on the road with my fiancee for 18 months, there is still so much we learnt from this book. It is easy to read with lots practical information that couples can do to make travelling together more rewarding. The personal stories from the authors are also great to know their ups and downs of travelling on the road.

This book covers everything from planning, researching to living on the road and also has loads of useful resources inside.
