Book Description

April 1, 1995
Reflecting the desire of late 20th-century crafters and artists to learn about and take part in the handmade traditions of the past, quilting has recently experienced a revival. This book provides a complete course in this functional craft and features chapters on materials, techniques, colour and design. The projects comprise a series of lessons, each slightly more advanced than the last, that build a vocabulary of techniques for conceiving and executing designs. Even if readers have never sewn a stitch before, the first project - a doll's patchwork quilt - should be well within their grasp. Experienced quilters should appreciate the approach to colour and design that evolves from the first quilt through to the last. In addition to such fundamental procedures as estiming yardage, developing a layout, choosing fabrics, piecing and quilting, each demonstration is accompanied by a "colour note" that contains information on how colour, line and shape can work most effectively within a particular pattern. Also included are 14 additional patterns, each with a piecing sequence diagram and an example of a completed square.

This is an excellent book. It has lots of color and shows quilting techniques and projects from stool and pillow covers to clothing. The text descriptions are clear and easy to follow. Photos of the work of a many other diverse quilting artists offer great ideas for advanced quilters and inspiration for beginners. I get new ideas every time I read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good book with beautiful quilts, December 14, 1998

This review is from: Art and Craft of Quilting: "A Beginner's Guide to Patchwork Design, Color and Expession" (Paperback)
This is a well written and informative book full of colorful examples. I was primarily interested in learning Bargello design techniques. That chapter was very good. The tip on using adhesive backed foot pads to make straight seams really works! I also particularly liked the chapter on wearable quilt art.

In addition to the mechanics of quilting the author covers quite extensively the artistic elements of quilting. Throughout the book are insets titled "Color Note" which I found helpful in explaining the effects that different color fabrics have on each other.
