Book Description

October 1, 1999

This exploration of Art Deco architectural design embraces many different times and places in its visual and verbal account of the movement's origins, development, and influence.

Art Deco's sheer exuberance ensured its success across the globe and it adapted to the most diverse situations, as shown by examples ranging from offices in Europe and gas stations in America to maharajahs' palaces in India and imperial dwellings in Japan. Public buildings of all kinds-whether fountain or state capitol, skyscraper or bus terminal-bear witness to its decades of popularity. Sumptuously illustrated, this unrivaled study provides a comprehensive guide to the best loved of all 20th-century architectural styles. 376 illustrations, 146 in color

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

From a sleekly modern apartment house in Cairo to a town hall in the Netherlands, architecture was influenced internationally by the Art Deco style, as revealed by this wide-angled, superbly illustrated survey. Bayer ( The Art of Rene Lalique ) first uncovers Art Deco's ancient and exotic sources, from Assyrian to Mayan to Moorish. Her text, wedded to 376 jazzy, snazzy illustrations (146 in color), demonstrates how this vibrant, decorative style extended between the wars into every nook and cranny of the U.S. leaving its mark on skyscrapers, movie theaters, firehouses, factories, dams, tunnels, high schools, gas stations, roadside diners and even gravestones. Bayer also examines the Art Deco revival, citing restored Miami Beach hotels as well as public buildings by Michael Graves, Robert Venturi and Helmut Jahn that echo or evoke Art Deco, a style "at once traditional and innovative."

4.0 out of 5 stars ART DECO, December 22, 2007
This review is from: Art Deco Architecture: Design, Decoration, and Detail from the Twenties and Thirties (Paperback)
Let me state off the bat; I love Art Deco architecture. The artistry and the masonry that went into these buildings is a feast for the eyes. This book is very thorough and the vintage black and white pictures ooze sepia, some these buildings I had never seen photographed. The text is informative without being too scholarly or too grossly indepth. This is one of the better books on Art Deco, but still the book on American Art Deco is the best, it has recent color images and is just a much prettier book, but for what this is, it succeeds very well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Bargain on Art Deco, September 11, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Art Deco Architecture: Design, Decoration, and Detail from the Twenties and Thirties (Paperback)
I agree that this is not the best buy on Art Deco but it is maybe the best value for money you can find.
There are good pictures and the text is also great. We would like to have some more colour pictures or more recent photos, with better quality but ...
I highly recommend the book.
