Miss Baker's "Sugar Baby" Shine Still Pleases,
By houseathena@earthlink.net (Pacific Northwest USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Art Deco Series: Breezin' Along (Audio CD)
No one evoked "Sugar Baby" sexuality better than Josephine Baker. The mystique of her french lyrics carries over well in this collection of songs in english. From "What Do I Say (After I Say I'm Sorry)" to "Bye Bye Blackbird", her giddy interpretations deliver classic American lyrics with a sly sensuality unduplicated by any other performer, ex-patriate or otherwise.Anyone who enjoys the naive style of the popular music of her era will certainly enjoy this recording. Be aware that the sound quality is consistent with the original recordings--if you enjoy listening to 78s, you will find the sound to be handsomely nostalgic.

The Vivacious Joséphine Baker,
By Shane (New Zealand) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Art Deco Series: Breezin' Along (Audio CD)
This compilation of Joséphine Baker's recordings in the 1920's is AMAZING!
Firstly, let me say, Joséphine was an amazing talent, and you must also buy her recordings in French throughout the 1930's and 40's. But this collection is great from beginning to end. There's not an awful lot I don't like about Joséphine. Her voice is incredible, this is what a jazz singer should sound like. The songs are first class. Other reviewers comment on the sound quality, and say that they "expected CD quality sound". These people are ignorant fools, to be quite honest. When you are dealing with recordings of this age, remastering can only do so much. This CD is impeccably remastered, but you must remember that these recordings are 70 or more years old - the sound old. That's most of their charm. I always think, if you were to remove the audible age of the recordings, you -by and large- remove what is so fantastic about them. If you want modern recordings, listen to modern recordings. Anyway, this is a great collection, well remastered, well sequenced. Good liner notes. Great pictures. Buy it. Joséphine, as the back cover says, was one of the greatest entertainers that ever was - revel in her vivacious recordings...they're awesome.

Sounds like original recording,

This review is from: Art Deco Series: Breezin' Along (Audio CD)
I had hoped that the recording on CD would have been cd quality. Instead it sounds as if they took the original recording and placed it on the cd. Could stand a little remixing to enhance the quality of the sound.
Don't get me wrong the music is great, just difficult to hear clearly.
