One of the most interesting bands on Drive Thru,
By Alucard (NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Art of Disappointment (Audio CD)
Drive Thru Records, the spawning ground for many pop punk bands. While most of these bands are quite good, most have a bit of a repitition problem. While each one i've heard, i've enjoyed, but the riffs and lyrics are often similar, making the bands lyrically and musically interchangable. Aside from "RX Bandits" who are a full out ska band, "The Benjamins" come out with a new, original sound that makes them stand out from most of the bands on Drive Thru. Their first cd, "The Art of Disapointment" blends a pop punk sound similar to "Saves the Day" while adding an alternitive sound to it, similar to "Weezer". While this will turn off most fans of bands like New Found Glory and Fenix TX, it will please many people looking for a new type of pop punk, instead of your average Blink rip off.The stand out tracks here are "Wonderful" & "Sophia on the Stereo", which blends a harder type Weezer sound, "Couch" & "Clover", which is reminisent to a Saves the Day type sound and "Weather's Here, Wish You Were Beautiful" which combines the two sounds together. The other tracks are also good too, except for "Little Tin Heart" which never really appealed to me. So, If you are looking for an interesting new addition to the pop punk genre, don't hesitate to pick up this cd. However, you might want to listen before you buy it, it might turn you off if you are into stuff like NFG.

The Benjamins - The Art of Disappointment,
By Nate Freese (Caldwell, Idaho) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Art of Disappointment (Audio CD)
Ten (10) tracks of thoughtful, inspired pop rock. Nothing out of the ordinary but this was a big surprise coming from the early years of Drive-Thru Records (when DTR was arguably weaker than they are currently). The lyrics are intriguing and the song writing is fairly focused. Like most slightly-above-average rock albums it thrives when it is catchy yet smart and sinks when it comes accross as overly cheesy (which The Benjamins occasionally do). Think a less sugary, more intelligent version of geek rock. Check out "Wonderful," and "Dr. Frank Was Right." 3/5

They are the hottest new band, and they are ready to take over the whole world! The cd is a great combination of slow paced songs, to fast melodic songs. One of the best emo/pop albums of all time,
By

Years ago, around the time this album first came out, I was infected with that ever-so-common Drive thru bug that seemed to be taking ovre the pop-punk/ indie scene. If a band was on Drive Thru, I bought thier album, simple as that, and I was rarely disapointed. While many of those albums stood the test of time, none come to mind more for myself than the Benjamins Art of Disapointment.
One of the biggest regrets of my past concert going experiences was not catching this band while they were around. Granted, I'm basing my opinon of them entirely off this album, due to thier limited discography, but this one albums is all it takes for me. I can't think of another album that i can listen to start to finish dispite my current taste or trend in music that can hold a candle to this one. Every song on this cd is plauged with insanely catchy melodies, clever lyrics, and some of the best songwriting I've seen from any compairable band. My reasonoing for writing a review is that I've found myself hear on amazon buying my 2nd copy due to my origonal being just too scratched to play anymore (and believe me, I'm am an absolute cd nazi when it comes to not leaving them out, etc). I can't imagine life without this album, as I can honestly say that some of these songs have been stuck in my head on and off for nearly 8 years. I cant think of a more underrated band/album, and curse the fact that the Benjamins don't have a larger catolog of music. But i guess if your gonna only put out one full length, why not make it perfect, and this album is nothing short of that.

Rock Lives!,

How could anyone other than a fan of N'Sync give this cd only three and a half stars? This is one of the greatest cd's I have heard in a long time. I saw the Benjamins at Nashville River Stages and they sound just as good live. The songs all have catchy hooks and the lead guitar is awesome. These guys are going to be big if the label will promote them. If you like independent rock ala Superdrag & Idlewild, check these guys out. You won't be disappointed.

I can't say enough good things about this CD. You know the records you put on and, after a few plays, you really start to get into it? This isn't one of those. I couldn't get enough of this disc after the first time I put it in the stereo. The Benjamins are the best new band I've heard in a long, long time. Get this release now and get in on the ground floor of the next big thing.

The Benjamins Are Rippers,
By Jared (Wisconsin) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Art of Disappointment (Audio CD)
No longer Wisconsin's little secret the Benjamins broke out with this record label release (Drive-Thru). I thought their first EP ruled, but this blows that outta the water. The album's 10 tracks and secret song keep any listener entertained for the CD's duration. From the amazingly catchy "Sophia On The Stereo" to the epic sad love tune "Dr. Frank Was Right" to the rock-out secret song "(Untitled)" this album should blow up any minute. The musicians are talented, the lyrics are awesome, and the production is second to none. If you like to rock listen to the Benjamins. Get the CD quick so when they make it huge you can say you are old school!!! --ROCK--, Jared

Good Album, Bad Repeat Ability,
By Sloppy Nate (Parrallelfromeverything, Indiana) - See all my reviews

this album is more of a 3.6 or a 3.7, but not exactly enough to get a 4. yesterday, i picked this up. i was extremely excited to get it, seeing as how i'd been annticipating it for nearly a month now. listening to it through the first time, this album was one of the best. listening to it a second time, it got a little less better. and now, on my 5th or 6th time through, this album is lacking something such great new releases as The Ataris "End Is Forever" and New Found Glory "New Found Glory" have. maybe it's the singalong catchiness this cd doesn't have. talking all bad about this cd isn't it though...cause it does have a lot of great songs! such as "Couch", "Wonderful", "Sophia on the Stereo", "Shine", "Dr. Frank Was Right", and "Riverwest Creeps." if you're not too sure about this record, check it out. 10 bucks won't hurt you TOO much. this is going to be one of those albums that you listen to, get sick of it. and in two-three months you find it again and listen to it, and love it again. you know what i'm talking about! though it won't hurt if you're a Weezer or Nerf Herder fan.
