The Art of Editing continues to be the standard by which editing texts are judged, offering the most comprehensive and up-to-date discussion of editing available. Long viewed as the classic" in the field of editing, The Art of Editing continues to evolve to meet the needs of today's students. While traditional newspaper editing forms the foundation of the text, attention is also placed on the other areas in which students are increasingly finding jobs: online media, corporate magazines, broadcasting, public relations and advertising.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

The Art of Editing continues to be the standard by which editing texts are judged, offering the most comprehensive and up-to-date discussion of editing available.

  • Adds new material comprising over half the text, including more practical instruction, more sidebars, and new concepts such as the “Three R's of Editing” and “holistic editing.”
  • Places increased emphasis on editing for radio, television, and the World Wide Web, providing students with critical information for today's media environment.
  • Features a new focus on convergence, reflecting the vast changes occurring in the media today.
  • Expands coverage of legal and ethical issues to help better prepare students for their professional careers.

Praise for The Art of Editing
“I believe The Art of Editing is a solid text for the first-year, basic course on editing news copy. It offers a good mix of editing philosophies and the basics: guidelines, rules and examples.”
Bill Ferguson, Columbia College

“Major strengths of the text are that it is comprehensive, serious and professional and doesn't talk down to the students and that, overall, it doesn't oversimplify the art of editing.”
Dr. Emil Dansker, Central State University

“I used the Brooks/Sissors text because it offered editing suggestions for a variety of media. I chose the text because it compiled a lot of information into one book rather than several: style, grammar, design, editing techniques.”
Leara Rhodes, University of Georgia

“I initially used Brooks and Sissors because I inherited it from my predecessor...but I've stuck with it because it gets the job done. It is the lone text that I have not replaced in a journalism course...”
Robert K. Hays, Northampton Community College

“Overall, I have always thought this text to be an excellent book. I admire its comprehensive chapters. It's helpful, concise, and true to the ideals of journalism.”
Glen L. Bleske, California State University Chico

This review is from: Art of Editing, The (Hardcover)
I used the first edition of this text in college back in 1972, and still have my copy. Now as an instructor I am using the 6th edition and am looking for a change. This book lacks three things; internet, internet, internet, and until it is brought up-to-date, it is not worth the price. It galls me that a book like this can seem to live forever while gouging undergraduates with poor revisions, and "new" editions designed solely to sell more books. Right now there are better books at half the price. I'm moving on.

3.0 out of 5 stars You'd think a book on editing would be edited..., January 13, 2006
This review is from: Art of Editing, The (8th Edition) (Hardcover)
For a book that cost me $93.00, I was expecting something wonderful. Instead I found three blatant editing errors (one of which would have easily been corrected had someone hit "spell check" before sending it to the printers) within the first couple of chapters, and more as I went on. The book was boring, badly edited, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
