What a Voice!, March 23, 2011

I hate to admit it, but this pristine CD was my first aural experience with this fantastic artist. I bought it mainly for the Strauss valedictory (Four Last Songs) but also because it's the only such release I've found that couples the Strauss with Berlioz's "song cycle" (Les nuits d'ete). I enjoyed all the selections, "even" the Berg. I wish I had been more aware of Ms. Lear 30 years ago when I first became interested in opera and orchestral lieder. She packs power yet sings with finesse, even the most muscular moments of the recital recorded here. I was leery of VAI but found no reason to continue feeling so and will purchase other titles on that label due to this experience.
