This review is from: The Art of Fly-Tying: An Angler's Complete Handbook and Kit (Paperback)
FOR THE PRICE, this book and kit are great fun. The book is, albeit concise, quite good. But on top of that, you get a pretty good set of tools for getting started. The bobbin is made by Sunrise, has a rolled edge to go easier on the thread, and is quite nice. Also included is a nice whip-finisher. The hackle pliers are adequate but you'll want better ones, and the vise is, well, either best described as utilitarian or elegant, depending on what kind of mood you're in. It's simple but also quite functional and sturdy. Also included are materials for several flies (if you're just starting out, you'll appreciate this luxury). If you get into this strangely addicting hobby, you'll definitely want a better vise and many more toys. But for a hobby that can get as expensive as this one, this kit is the perfect way to "test the waters" before you, like many others, become totally obsessed. I just noticed it's now out of print, which is a shame. I hope that changes. Anyway, just in case, I'd snatch one up now.
