Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"...for English only readers [the book] is a mine of information since it covers a great deal of classical graphology that has never been translated into English... A graphologist stranded on an island with only one of his books would be fortunate if it happens to be Marie Bernard's 'Art of Geography.'"--THE GRAPHOLOGIST

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic - one of the first definitive books on handwriting analysis, November 2, 2009
By
This review is from: The Art of Graphology (Hardcover)
This reference (a HUGE book, nearly 500 pages) is one of the first exhaustive resources for handwriting analysis, by Marie Bernard.

The book first introduces the subject of graphology, the history, and the credibility of the science itself (what it can and can't tell us about a person).

It then divides handwriting analysis in three general sections, arranged by process of analysis. The first section analyzes process of movement (i.e., pressure applied to page, how letters are connected, etc). The second section analyzes formed picture (i.e., little details such as dotting the "i" and what it means, etc). The third section analyzes arrangement (i.e., slant of writing, how wide/narrow the letters are, loops, distance between words, etc).

Overall, the book covers hundreds of topics, and conclusions that can be drawn from handwriting, including a lengthy appendix. Some of the sub-topics include the following:

*Handwriting of serial killers
*Lie detection
*Insincerity in handwriting
*Forgery detection
*Document examination
*Psychoanalysis by handwriting
*Handwriting indicates repressed person
*Personality types / personality analysis
*Self-analysis
*Court documents
*Psychological diagnosis based on handwriting
*Jungian analysis
*Case studies (i.e., David Berkowitz, John Henkley)
*Much, much more

Some of the most intriguing case studies were: William Shakespeare, the Hitler Diaries, and Josef Mengele (the Nazi medical doctor at Auschwitz who performed inhumane experiments on humans).

Lie detection has become a big part of law enforcement in recent years, and this book can be an interesting resource to detect insincerity, exaggeration, lies, etc. in handwriting. I had access to this book from a small legal library (city attorney who used it for court), but it has a broad range of applications.
