Solid book...,

This review is from: The Art of Ground Fighting: Principles & Techniques (Hardcover)
Contrary to several other reviewers I think this is a great book. I've studied several martial arts including Judo and BJJ. I'm a good enough grappler to hold my own with most people. Many of the techniques in this book can be found in the current crop of BJJ books. The difference being this book has better pictures and text. That can make all the difference. There are a few techniques that I would skip over, but that could be said about any martial art book that I own. I've always thought of Hapkido as Korean Jujitsu. It is wrong to assume that because a system has kicks it can't offer anything else. Don't pay any attention to the BJJ hype in some of the other reviews. This is a worth while purchase.

Excellent book for self defence,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Art of Ground Fighting: Principles & Techniques (Hardcover)
If you are a practicioner of Brazillian JJ, this book is not for you. But if you intend to pick up a few new ideas on how to prevent yourself from ending up on the ground in the first place, or defending yourself with some unconventional techniques, read on. Most of us who learn self defence do not want to roll around on the ground amongst the gravel and broken glass to defend ourselves against an attacker. This, along with the threat of multiple attackers, are weaknesses of the Brazillian JJ system. None the less, Brazillian JJ should be studied because defending yourself on the ground is very important, and for this it is very good. There are many other styles out there though, and Mr. Tedeschi shows some great escapes, counters and take downs which Martial Artists with an open mind, and not restricted by a "my style is the best" philosophy should appreciate.

Another Great Work From Master Tedeschi!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Art of Ground Fighting: Principles & Techniques (Hardcover)
This book is another in the series of books from Master Tedeschi. Much of it is taken from his book, Hapkido, Philosophy, Traditions and Techniques, and it expands upon those basics. This is valuable material for beginners and veterans alike. The explanations are easy to follow, with some of the best photography ever taken for a martial arts book.

Another excellent text by Mr. Tedeschi,

Mr. Tedeschi has done it again! This book is an outstanding resource for anyone seriously interested in self-defence. It manages to be both traditional and modern in its approach. In my opinion, the chapter on chokes and headlocks alone is worth the price of the book. As with the other books in this series, the layout is well thought out, the photos are clear and the accompanying instructional narrative is first rate. If you have bought all of Mr. Tedeschi's books in this series as I have (The Art of Throwing, The Art of Holding and The Art of Striking) - you will notice there is quite a bit of overlap. Nevertheless, I still give all of these texts top-marks. Undoubtedly, this is a book you will take off your bookshelf often for perusal.

Dont buy this book to learn "groundfighting",
By A Customer
This review is from: The Art of Ground Fighting: Principles & Techniques (Hardcover)
I must admit that this book is well produced. Great pictures and a nice hardcover and illustrations BUT the content is terrible.First of all this guy is a "hapkido" expert. He has no business writing a book on ground fighting and the techniques in the book show this. The locks he shows will get you killed against anyone with experience in grappling. If you want to learn real groundfighting buy a book written by someone who is a true expert like Royler Gracie or Rigan Machado. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the most effective and efficient art of groundfighting and is what people really want. Why do I know that this is what people really want? Because if it wasn't for the recent popularity in "groundfighting" started by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experts such as the Gracies and the Machados this "Art of Groundfighting" book would never have been produced. Don't waste your time.

This is not "ground fighting".,

This review is from: The Art of Ground Fighting: Principles & Techniques (Hardcover)
I bought this book because I am a practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and I am constantly trying to expand my style. I have to say I was very surprised after thoroughly examining the contents. The author seems to have no clue about what constitutes ground fighting. The techniques offered in these pages are next to useless against an experienced ground fighter. Any student wishing to become a more accomplished ground fighter will do very well to steer clear of this [weak item]. |
