Book Description

October 1, 2000
Potters have been using traditional handbuilding methods for generations, but new methods are now eagerly being tried, inspiring a host of discoveries in contemporary ceramics. This book begins with an historical and cultural overview of world ceramics, then moves on to an introductory section for beginners. With the aid of clear instructions and step-by-step photos, the novice learns all the traditional handbuilding and glazing methods. In addition, the author's special interest in surface decoration introduces innovative new ways of monoprinting on clay and texturing with clay slips. Advanced students are then shown how to explore the exciting possibilities of paperclay. This comparatively new medium, which is extremely strong and versatile, allows artists to scale new heights of creativity. Fully illustrated with color photos, The Art of Handbuilt Ceramics includes all the information necessary to progress from beginner to artist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Aimed at beginners, August 4, 2006
This review is from: The Art of Handbuilt Ceramics (Hardcover)
The book was geared toward those without much working knowledge of handbuilding. The photos were very nice, and included various different ways of approaching handbuilding, so could serve to inspire someone try new approaches.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for beginning to intermediate ceramists., September 14, 2008
This review is from: The Art of Handbuilt Ceramics (Hardcover)
One can never buy all the books for a hobby but if you can afford just one book on handbuilding techniques, it would be for the book; THE ART OF HANDBUILT CERAMICS.

It has lots of pictures, instructions and inspiration on how to work your clay. It's worth every penny. My only problem is that I can't share it with other ceramists.....not being sure that they'd return the great book once they've read it.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's OK, December 30, 2010
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Art of Handbuilt Ceramics (Hardcover)
Way too much of this book is devoted to the history of pottery. The beginning of the book repeats information found in countless other pottery books addressing the reader as a beginner. Then, the instructions for the projects seem to leave out information assuming the reader is experienced in working with clay.
I wanted more specific, clearly-written steps in how the author creates her own work.
