Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Art History, Combined Volume, 4/e provides the reader with the most student-friendly, contextual, and inclusive art history survey on the market.  These hallmarks makeART HISTORYthe choice for reader who seeks to actively engage in the study of art.

This new edition of ART HISTORY is the result of a happy and productive collaboration between two scholar-teachers (Marilyn Stokstad and Michael Cothren) who share a common vision that survey courses on the history of art should be filled with as much enjoyment as erudition, and that they should foster an enthusiastic, as well as an educated, public for the visual arts.

Like its predecessors, this new edition seeks to balance formal and iconographic analysis with contextual art history in order to craft interpretations that will engage a diverse student population.  Throughout the text, the visual arts are treated as part of a larger world, in which geography, politics, religion, economics, philosophy, social life, and the other fine arts are related components of a vibrant and cultural landscape.

About the Author

Marilyn Stokstad, teacher, art historian, and museum curator, has been a leader in her field for decades and has served as president of the College Art Association and the International Center of Medieval Art.  In 2002, she was awarded the lifetime achievement award from the National Women’s Caucus for Art.  In 1997, she was awarded the Governor’s Arts Award as Kansas Art Educator of the Year and an honorary degree of doctor of humane letters by Carleton College.  She is Judith Harris Murphy Distinguished Professor Emerita at the University of Kansas, Lawrence.  She has also served in various leadership capacities at the University’s Spencer Museum of Art and is Consultative Curator of Medieval Art at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri

Michael W. Cothren is Scheuer Family Professor of Humanities at Swarthmore College, where he has also served as Art Department Chair, Coordinator of Medieval Studies, and Divisional Chair of the Humanities.  Since arriving at Swarthmore in 1978, he has taught specialized courses on Medieval, Roman, and Islamic art and architecture, as well as seminars on visual narrative and on theory and method, but he particularly enjoys teaching the survey to Swarthmore beginners.  His research and publications focus on French Gothic art and architecture, most recently in a book on the stained glass of Beauvais Cathedral entitled Picturing the Celestial City.  Michael is a consultative curator at the Glencairn Museum in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania. He has served on the board of the International Center of Medieval Art and as President both of the American Committee of the International Corpus Vitrearum and of his local school board. When not teaching, writing, or pursuing art historical research, you can finding him hiking in the red rocks around Sedona, Arizona.

First off I would like to say that this book is huge and heavy. A total back breaker. With that said the content of the book is well written and the artwork depicted is splendid. I had to get this for a class I'm taking and thought I would sell it back at the end of the school year but changed my mind. I can't get pass the beauty of this product. As well as the detailed history that Marilyn Stokstad provides. It's thorough and to the point without being dry. Which makes learning about the history of Art more fun in my eyes. I believe anybody will enjoy having this book whether or not you are taking a college course or not. It's a definite conversation piece. Not something to be plowed through (especially topping at a 1000 pages)but something you can go back to time and time again to explore the different cultural aspects of art. Yes it's a hefty price tag but well worth the cost. Can't say that about the many textbooks I had to purchase over the year. This one is a keeper.

I purchased this book as a reference for my Art History course in school. The requirement was only the first volume but since I like art i decided to go with the full version and it is a keeper. I usually sell back all of my textbooks, but this one is staying with my for good. I purchased the kindle edition and reading it on the iPad with retina display, and let me tell you that those paintings and all the illustrations look better than on the real paper. Another advantage is you can zoom into paintings and artwork and see closeups that you wouldn't be able to see in the book.

Purchased 1995 edition for under $4 including shipping as an addition to my personal library. Truly a beautiful book, very heavy, and literally bursting with color images and reproductions. In over 1,100 pages Stokstad does a wonderful job chronicling the complete history of art, from prehistoric art through modern art covering the entire globe!

I strongly recommend this Art History book for everyone interested in arts. I'm not an art student, but I sit and read this book from time to time. I find the texts comprehensible even without prior knowledge, art photos of good quality and easy to navigate index. You can find any artist of slight importance mentioned here, and all notable artists are reviewed in detail. Very good book!

Not nearly enough pictures and art examples in a book of this size and context.
