This was shot like a puzzle which is pretty a bunch of clips from other DVDs with a narrator, they give good info but just when you it gets good it doesn't, it covers everything from the abyss to ghostbusters to wolf. Try to get some books on this subject for more infomation. Try to rent not buy.

Not very thorough, November 30, 2004
This review is from: The Art of Illusion: 100 Years of Hollywood Special Effects (DVD)
I was hoping to have something I could show my film studies students to explain how special effects are done, but this skips a lot, including such elementary things as back-projection, doesn't really explain how traveling mattes are created, or why front-projection was revolutionary. OK as a bit of entertainment, but not a serious documentary on the subject.
