Format: Paperback
ART IN ITS OWN TERMS: SELECTED CRITICISM, 1935-1975 provides a powerful survey by one of America's most influential painters, also an art critic. His writings consider the art world as a whole, analyzing the meanings of modern art on both a philosophical and artistic scale and providing college-level libraries strong in art theory and criticism with a powerful survey indeed. Suitable and recommended for classroom discussion, ART IN ITS OWN TERMS is a winning analysis.

As a painter, Fairfield Porter remains a powerful and important influence decades after his death. His essays of criticism, written for art magazines, are refreshing peeks into the mind of an artist who was one of the few hardy souls to continue pursuing representational art when all of New York, the newly-minted, post-war capital of the art world, had gone ga-ga over anything and everything that was abstract.

2 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Benjamin Cowan on December 20, 2008
Format: Paperback
This is a vast collection of all of Porter's writings. I've found it to be an interesting view on the painting of Porter's day. His ideas are different than most of the main stream critics and he has a fresh way of writing about painting. The only complaint is that all the left pages are printed to one side forcing the paragraph to the middle. Makes for unsymmetrical reading but whatever.
