3.0 out of 5 stars Lovely to look at, but disappointing
I borrowed this book from the Library, checking it out prior to buying. As an intermediate student I'm looking for that little bit extra, above the usual basic books. However, this was way above my head. I loved the pictures, which left me wondering 'how did they do that?' having found the instructions inadequate. I took the book back to the libary and didn't buy...

A quick thumb through told me this book was going to become my new favorite. The projects are quite inspirational and I found myself continuously saying "I have to try that". There could have been a few more step by step pictures, but the written instructions are clear and easy to follow so I can understand why they were left out. I was impressed that many projects were easy enough for beginners, yet there are others that will grab the more advanaced clayers like myself. The polymer clay basic section was short and sweet. That was another big plus in my eyes. I already have a couple dozen books that cover the basics, more basic, and yet more basics. This book is a definite must have for your personal libray!

5.0 out of 5 stars Polymer clay graduates from craft to art, July 12, 2006

This review is from: The Art of Jewelry: Polymer Clay: Techniques, Projects, Inspiration (Lark Jewelry Books) (Hardcover)
Polymer clay has been seen as a "craft" medium for some time. In the past few years, polymer clay has begun to receive recognition as a true art medium due to the exceptional work of very talented artists. Some of these outstanding artists have come together to both showcase their work and provide lessons on creating some very beautiful pieces.

What is nice about this book is that it shows that even simple techniques can produce high-quality work. The techniques range from very basic to very complex (the cover art shows one of the more complex pieces). However, the eye for design, form and function enable us to envision our own work at this level. It's clear that all of us are capable of creating unique, beautiful and artistic pieces from polymer clay. This book will help us all get there.

You shouldn't pass this book up. It's a book that I'll reach for over and over for both inspiration and instruction.

5.0 out of 5 stars buy this one now!, July 26, 2006
This review is from: The Art of Jewelry: Polymer Clay: Techniques, Projects, Inspiration (Lark Jewelry Books) (Hardcover)
buy it for your polymer clay friends - while the author doesn't have any projects of her own in the book, she's assembled some killer pieces from some of the best known and loved PC artists into the book of the year. this book was the talke of 2 PC retreats I've attended in the past month - great photos, clear instructions, and interesting new techniques like using colored TLS to created glass and celadon china like finishes

5.0 out of 5 stars From Craft to Art Form ... this book has it, January 7, 2007
This review is from: The Art of Jewelry: Polymer Clay: Techniques, Projects, Inspiration (Lark Jewelry Books) (Hardcover)
Rarely do I buy a book that I can honestly say I would be happy to make 90% of the projects contained within, usually I am lucky if I find 30-50% that I like!! So this book came as a complete surprise and welcome addition to my extensive collection. It is definitely in my top 5 books. The projects are probably not for a complete novice, but they certainly will inspire you. Finally, the workings of Jeffrey Lloyd Dever's AMAZING pods. Worth buying just for that! Good quality photographs, this book helps take Polymer from the Craft Cupboard to the Art Gallery, which is where it can hold it's head up high amongst the other media. Worth every cent.

I agree with the other opinions that this book has beautiful projects and photos, but just lacks detailed instructions. This type of book really needs to have step-by-step photos. If you already know the fundamentals of claying, then you'll follow right along. Beginners should get some experience and then come back to this selection.

I have never written a review before but after reading The Art of Jewelry I had to jump online and tell the world just how wonderful it was to have a book that was not to basic and not to advanced. If you have been playing with clay for a year or more this book will help you elevate you work. If you are brand new to polymer clay you might want to start with "The New Clay" by Nan Roche.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, but instructions may not be detailed enough for beginners, March 24, 2007

I love this book and refer to it all the time. Although the instructions are not as detailed as might be desirable for a beginner, there are numerous techniques discussed with enough general instructions provided for the intermediate or advanced polymer artist; many I'd never seen before. The book has really inspired me to try new and previously unknown techniques. I highly recommend it.

As long-time polymer clay enthusiast, I was very excited about this book, and it lived up to expectations! The project information is very complete, with easy to follow instructions and photos, and the examples are inspiring. It may be a little difficult for someone who has never worked in polymer before, but I think the projects would be suitable for someone who has a basic knowledge, as well as more advanced artists. I have never been disappointed in a Lark Publishing book and they came through again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular, October 11, 2009
This review is from: The Art of Jewelry: Polymer Clay: Techniques, Projects, Inspiration (Lark Jewelry Books) (Hardcover)
I could look at this book every day. Unlike some books which include some basic techniques and then load all the good stuff into the gallery, this book is all in. Each of the artists represented here has very generously shared amazing techniques and accompanied them with easily understood directions. I really enjoyed this book from cover to cover. There's not a project here that I don't want to try. And then, just as you think it can't get any better, there is a fabulous gallery at the end of the book, with the artists sharing even more of their work building on these techniques. I highly recommend it for anyone's library. What a pleasure!
