4.0 out of 5 stars Printing errors but fabulous pictures
This is a wonderful reference book just for the photos of the jewelry. However, there are numerous errors in the printing/editing of this book: the descriptions of many pieces of the pictured jewelry have been mixed up, and one chapter on techniques is cut short in the middle of a sentence. Buy this book for the marvelous photos and innovative work but read with care.

Schiffer Publishing's books, in general, suffer from the same malady -- poor editing. This one, although it presents some beautiful art jewelry pieces we would not see otherwise, was in need of an editorial scrub before it went to press.

Schiffer Publishing's books, in general, suffer from the same malady -- poor editing. This one, although it presents some beautiful art jewelry pieces we would not see otherwise, was in need of an editorial scrub before it went to press.

If we overlook the errors, we'll see Cynthia Toops's wild polymer pin/pendant "Havoc on the Food Chain." David C. Freda's "Stag Beetles, Grubs, and Raspberries" is a fantasy in silver, 24k and 18k gold, and glass enamel. Harriet Berman uses recycled tin UPC codes to make beads. Revel in what you see in the pictures and try to ignore the sloppiness of the publisher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous book, inspiring, April 14, 2005
This review is from: Art Jewelry Today (Hardcover)
This book showcases an extensive collection of mixed media/art jewelry. It's better than most of the gallery style jewelry books on the market, and I own many. The pictures are gorgeous, you can see the details clearly with so many large photos included. I love the fact that it includes silver, gold, resin, enamel and other mixed media pieces including recycled materials. Some of my favorite artists include Thomas Mann, Cynthia Toops, Susan Sloan and David and Roberta Willamson; they as well as many other talented artists are featured in this book. I write craft books and also make jewelry and found this book to be very inspiring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful & Inspiring., November 4, 2006
By
This review is from: Art Jewelry Today (Hardcover)
I bought this book knowing that it would be a "Coffee table" type gallery book. I knew it was not project based.
I love it, its beautiful and inspiring just as I hoped it would be.
There have been many jewellers included who use a variety of media from 24 & 18kt gold to silver, enamel, resin and found objects.
This IS art jewellery and I aspire to it.
I work with PMC (Precious metal clay), resin, polymer, silver and gold sheet and wire and precious and semi precious beads and gemstones. I love to incorporate many things into my jewellery and this book, I felt, was a designers inspiration.
I loved looking at some of the designers working studios - i wish that my studio was so beautiful!!
This book is chok full of colourful pictures of a good quality.
I must admit that I hadn't noticed the poor editing mentioned in the other review - whether this was because I was so engrossed in the pictures or that I have not yet spotted them, I don't know. Either way, it definately didn't effect my enjoyment of this publication.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Review of Contemporary Jewelry Design, August 4, 2005
This review is from: Art Jewelry Today (Hardcover)
If you want to know what modern high end jewelry designers are up to, this is the book for you. Extensive, well shot color pictures of a wide variety jewelry from many artisans.

I particularly enjoyed the pictures of contemporary jewelry making studios and information about how the jewelry is crafted. The section on found and recycled objects used to make is interesting and relevant.

There is some effort to tie contemporary design to it's historical antecedents, but really this is a book you buy for the pictures. Should be an inspiration to contemporary crafters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it for the photos, October 3, 2006
This review is from: Art Jewelry Today (Hardcover)
This is truly one of the best books for simply gazing at the exquisite work of a myriad of contemporary artists. I love the diversity of media used (gold, silver, found objects, polymer, resin, etc etc. The photography was sensational and the editor needs to go back to school to learn their craft, disappointing when this is definitely a must have book. I especially liked the how to sections and looking at other's studios.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great pix and more!, June 10, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Art Jewelry Today (Hardcover)
Dona Meilach has pored over thousands of photos of jewelry to put together a comprehensive overview of jewelry being made by artists today, primarily in the U.S. It is a book that can be enjoyed at many levels. You can simply look at the pictures, or you can read and learn more. Either way, you will enjoy yourself, and learn too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Art Jewelry is worth a look., January 9, 2007
This review is from: Art Jewelry Today (Hardcover)
This is a beautiful book, lavishly illustrated with wonderful color images. The gamut of materials and styles is impressive. As a creative designer, I found this book to be a fountain of information and ideas. There is not a lot of text but the number of images makes up for it. There is a good bibliography if more information is needed.
