Editorial Reviews

Review

"Art Lab for Little Kids author, susan Schwake, follows her wildly successful, Art Lab for Kids with another solid hit - a clear, simple guide to exploring art with small children that parents and teachers will delight in." - Rebecca Emberley, Best-selling children's book author and illustrator

"Based on the ideas and images of master artists, these art activities and experiences are developmentally appropriate, adventurous, imaginative, and thoroughly engaging while leading to the creation of artworks with meaning and significance. Art Lab for Little Kids is an important contribution to the literature of the often-overlooked field of visual arts education for preschool children." - Bill Haust, Professor Emeritus of Art Education, Plymouth State University

"I love Susan's Art Lab series and reference them in the Art Studio often. They're easy to follow, full of images, and directed at open-ended exploration - exactly the kind of reference I need for my own busy home." - Meghan Burch, Art Studio Educator, The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, Amherst, MA

More About the Author

Susan Schwake is an artist, art educator, author and curator. Her passion for teaching art for over 20 years has found her working in diverse settings such as private and public schools, community organizations, programs for medically fragile children, special needs agencies, summer camps, intergenerational facilities, libraries, and her own little art school to thousands of people. Most recently she has taken her classroom online. Rainer Schwake produced the new series of e-courses called: Art Class including courses in Painting, Mixed Media, Printmaking and Hand-building with Clay. Each year Susan celebrates her student's work - both children and adults - in exhibits twice a year at the local library gallery.

Susan works with diverse groups of people making art. She was hired to organize and create a permanent exhibition of children's art, involving more than one hundred local children. The children created the artwork for a new children's wing in the local library. She also was chosen to direct a similar project with four hundred people in an intergenerational setting for a new multi-agency facility. This process-oriented program was designed to bring the staff, families, and clients more closely together through the process of making art together and was permanently displayed in the facility.

Following the release of her first three books the Art Lab for Kids series - Susan continues to offer workshops and programs to parents, teachers at universities, art studios, community organization, public and private schools. Her fourth book: Art for All Seasons, published by Two Little Birds is due out November 1st 2014. This book offers a curriculum to be used all year around and each lesson is inspired by the natural world and a contemporary artist.

She exhibits her own artwork in galleries in the United States and Europe. Susan has been juried public art exhibitions, creating large-scale, site-specific outdoor works. She has curated over 80 compelling contemporary exhibitions to date in her own gallery of hundreds of national and international artist's work. She curates a rotating gallery in her city's hospital and has worked with many corporations installing original artwork from her gallery's stable of artists.

Susan works alongside her husband Rainer at artstream studios in New Hampshire. Together they collaborate daily within each facet of their creative business. Rainer holds a masters degree in Design from Farholschule, Muenster Germany and has created award winning websites and print materials for companies in a wide range of sectors. Art for All Seasons features Rainer's layout and design, including over 400 photographs that the couple styled together and photographed. They work together creating exhibit layouts, media design work and promoting the art school which they have built together. They wouldn't have it any other way. They have two creative children who write and make art and delight them endlessly.

Art Lab for Little Kids offers clear instruction on process-based art instruction. The guidance is clear without being overwhelming, and the projects appeal to the preschool set. The photography and composition of the actual pages are a pleasure to look through (i.e. coffee table book enjoyable) despite the fact that this is a book that is truly meant to be used--meant to get in the mix with the art supplies themselves. The first reviewer's comment on this site which criticized the book for being too focused on "neatness" is off-base. As in any art form, in order to improvise, you first need to understand how the material/medium works, work through a few projects and then take off on your own. In *any* fine arts class, there are parameters in place, from selection of material, to use of tools. Creating a big mucky mess may appeal to some, but if you are looking for a book which will guide you through getting your hands dirty while having fun with your child or students, don't hesitate to purchase this book. A good, useful book to get you started. You'll be turning your kitchen table into a lab space in no time at all! Don't be afraid to make some art, in fact, ENJOY.

This book is a fantastic companion to the Art Lab for Kids. As an art teacher and a parent of 2 preschoolers, I enjoyed seeing students working in each lab. In my opinion, the several photos that accompany each lab, help a parent or educator explain to a child visually what the next steps should look like and help a preschooler visualize themselves creating the lesson.

This book is great for home schooling parents who are looking for an art book that they can use to explore different art venues with their children. There is a good mix of art techniques that can be applied to a broad range of young children beyond just the preschool age group. An example of this is the project on page 28, called "Buttermilk Chalk. It gives the recipe for buttermilk chalk and explains why this is a better quality chalk for young artists to work with. Personally, I do not believe anyone is ever too old to play with chalk. I painted my refrigerator with chalkboard paint to give my kids a place to express themselves. They love drawing on it. I have seen them draw old master reproductions to modern lettering. I have to say that this chalk recipe doesn't leave as much dust behind as regular chalk does. Plus, it has a nicer texture to work with.

The 52 Labs, in this book, are created to stand-alone and are accessible by readers of all ages who work with young children. Each lab also gives some background information on the artist or art style that inspired the lab. This is a technique-based book that offers 52 opportunities to learn different techniques using a variety of materials. Because of this, parents don't have to worry about their children being exposed to age inappropriate material or nudity. (See the table of contents provided by the publisher to see the great variety of techniques in this book.)

Also, even if you don't have an art background this book is great for parents who want to encourage their young children to explores different areas of art like: collage, drawing, mixed media, painting, paper art, pastels, and even print making.

The ideas are interesting, but the way they are presented isn't very true to life. Most projects mention "thinking through what you want it to look like before you begin." Little kids don't do this. They explore as they go. Most of their expressions will be abstract and often if they draw an actual 'thing', it's because that's what their drawing started to look like to them as they were working. Scribbling is normal -important, even. So by all means, set out oil pastels and permanent markers or sandpaper and crayons. But allow it to remain truly open-ended. "Process not product" was intended to replace cookie cutter type projects (like gluing cotton balls to a paper plate that the teacher had cut into the shape of a rabbit) with child-directed discovery and exploring of materials. Don't be tempted to make getting a particular effect out of a particular combination of items the new 'product.'

Other than that, there is a real focus on not making a mess and avoiding accidents, which might speak to some personality types but I mention it just in case you, like me, are at the other end of the spectrum and find that it's harder to experiment if you're very preoccupied with keeping things tidy. This book seems the opposite of, say, Beautiful Oops!

One thing I especially like about this book is the inclusion of art history -every "lab" includes an artist and one of his or her works as relates to the project in mind. The photography is also quite beautiful -probably the one thing missing from
