4.0 out of 5 stars Nice companion with lots of storyboard art

The Lion King was the first movie I watched in the cinema. Although I can't remember anything about the movie today, I do remember that I liked it very much. I was 13 back then.

2.0 out of 5 stars Here are the production stills... and a maybe a lame sketch or two
I was very disappointed when I received this book.
It's almost all production stills, they have hardly any developmental art, and what they do show is rather lame story board art.
And instead of any sort of explanation for their choices, the making of the film etc. They tell you the plot of the film.
It's a children's book, which happens to contain a...

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice companion with lots of storyboard art, March 17, 2009
Length:: 0:26 Mins

The Lion King was the first movie I watched in the cinema. Although I can't remember anything about the movie today, I do remember that I liked it very much. I was 13 back then.

The Art of the Lion King is an oversized art book containing concept art, colour pencil storyboards and film stills. Some of the film stills when blown up over two pages still look fabulous. The concept art is amazing, specifically the stylized character designs and some of the background paintings.

The art is arranged according to story acts, and there are a lot of storyboards. Unfortunately, the accompanying text are only the plot lines.

Right at the end is the afterword, which is actually the production process of the movie. Here are stories on how Lion King was scripted, research done (including a trip to East Africa), things happening behind the scenes like the duties of the cleanup artists, using CAPS (computer software) to animate the film, creating special effects like rain or fire and other special effects.

It's a nice companion to the movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING ART ANIMATION, July 3, 2005

"The Lion King," Disney's 32nd animated film proved to be a smashing success, appealing to young, old, and those in between. As it filled movie houses, Disney mania swept the country again. The breathtaking visual effects that fascinated so many are brought to stunning life in "The Art of the Lion King" by Christopher Finch.

This lavish folio-size volume traces the creative process utilized in making the film, from black and white sketches to glorious full-color reproductions and even splendid fold-outs, one exhibiting the surreal beauty of the African natural world.

Actor James Earl Jones, the voice of Mufasa the Lion King in the film, contributes the foreword, while the text is by Christopher Finch, author of "The Art of Walt Disney."

Those fascinated by the art of animation and those touched by the story of Mufasa, Simba and Scar will treasure this color and fact filled memento.

Apart from the fact that my copy was close to pocket size, i thought that this book was fantastic. Not only does it come filled with amazing concepts, it also is accompanied with the Lion King Storyline. As an illustrator and student animator, it is a wonderful addition to my resources. The sketches through to the complete full colour images are for any Lion King fan, artists or just someone wanting a beautiful coffee table book. If your from overseas like myself and cannot get these kind of books in Australia, i reccommend Amazon and their associate stores. Buy this, its great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful graphics, including ones the public never sees, January 21, 1999

This review is from: The Art of The Lion King (Disney Miniature Series) (Hardcover)
This book is one of the most exquisite things to come out of The Lion King. The graphics are beautiful. Most of the pictures are ones that are used for the storyboard and layout scenes. I reccommend it to anyone who loves The Lion King, or just Disney in general. Order with confidence - the book is worth much more than its price tag. It is also much more convient than the larger, more expensive version which I believe is no longer being produced.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disney's best art book., January 5, 1996
By A Customer
The movie The Lion King was inspired not only by writers, composers, and Disney CEO's. The art behind the movie made the movie. The animators get their turn in this release. The book comes on very thick paper, and is reasonably priced at $50.00. On amazon.com, however, it is priced for the even more reasonable price of $45.00. This book is a must-have for any Disney collector. It is a rather large book having about a foot and a half by foot and three quarter dimensions. It is a great gift, and will last for a long time.
Also included are the out "takes", or things not put in the movie itself. This is a great buy, and is sure to appreciate in value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for animation art lovers., September 30, 1998
By A Customer
This book is great if you like to see all the art work that was created during the development of the movie as well as the finished scenes. They show you a lot of the concept art that was used so that you get a sense of how ideas developed and gives you a glimpse behind the scenes. The book is mostly pictures with less explanatory text than you usually see in similar books. So it's mostly a book to look at as opposed to reading. It's great if you enjoy looking at animation art.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book, I'll never regret this purchase., October 18, 2007

Art Andres (Arlington, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Art of The Lion King (Disney Miniature Series) (Hardcover)
I tend to do things without paying as much attention as I should, like buying this book without researching it's details.

I bought the book because my 5 year old daugher loves to draw, and because she's nuts over the Lion King at the moment. I figured it would be great for her to see not just finished work (like what winds up on television) but to also see sketches, concept drawing and paintings, and the like.

So I bought it. When I received it and saw it's pocket size I was so happy! It's absolutely the perfect size for a little kiddo like her, but the content is professional, serious and mature as I had expected. It's hard cover, totally full of pictures, and has glossy pages printed on high-quality paper. Some folks might have been put off by the size but for my purposes it was more than perfect!

We have great fun looking through it together and looking at all the different styles of artwork. If you or your kid likes to draw or paint, and likes this movie, You'll really be sorry if you don't buy a copy. No I don't work for Disney or Amazon. I just like to encourage and support my childs love for art any chance I get, and boy was this a great addition to her library.

5.0 out of 5 stars They don't make Art of books like this anymore..., March 26, 2011
The early Hyperion Art of books are the most beautiful in my opinion. They are very large format books which make looking at the artwork a real visual treat. Don't get me wrong, I like the recent Chronicle Art of books but they are somewhat smaller and the paper is not as thick as it was for the early Hyperion titles. The Art of the Lion King is a beautiful book to look at. A lot of character sketches and stills from the film...and I would mention that some pages are full-bleed (i.e. the color of the imagery goes to the edge of the page) which is an additional bonus when looking at a picture large. I love these early titles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love for Lion King art, February 3, 2009
This piece shows what effort it took to make the film, its not the best "art of xxx" - book I read but definetely above average. The book is full of shots from the movie and some unpublished material of early process of the film. One thhing that I'm missing from the book is a little interview of the artists.

This book is a must for those who love the Lion King as an art or for the artist who are about to start their studies for professional film work.
I gave 4* for this cause of its lenght, the detailed scenes and cause its from a masterpiece of a film ever made.
