5.0 out of 5 stars Make-up Bible
I HIGHLY recommend this book. It has been on my make-up table since it first came out. The instructions are clear, the discussions about color, texture and application are down-to-earth and easily understood. Lots of fun to read, too. Kevin comes across as a really nice person who is passionate about his art. Cured me of my make-up phobia permanently.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a guidebook for the novice.
This is really the Art of make up. It doesn't give you step-by-step instructions for applications. It has great pictures of celebrities and autobiographical text by Aucoin. I thought it would help me learn more about make- up applications. I guess I wanted a face map. The pictures are great and he is an artist, but I didn't learn much from the book, other than...

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure genius, December 2, 2000
This review is from: The Art of Makeup (Paperback)
If Picasso had written a book ÒThe art of paintingÓ would anyone buy the book and think they could paint like Picasso, or would you have purchased the book to read about how a genius learned and practiced his craft? KevynÕs first book ÒThe Art of MakeupÓ is about the art of the craft had how Kevyn (and his mentors and predecessors) elevated putting on facepaint to an artform. As a freelance makeup artist I appreciated the book as a celebration of makeup and not a how to manual. Fortunately, KevynÕs second book ÒMaking FacesÓ is more of a makeup 101

3.0 out of 5 stars Great pictures!, March 25, 1999

This review is from: The Art of Makeup (Paperback)
I bought this book to get good ideas for doing make-overs, and I was a bit disappointed. I recommend Kevin's other book, "Making Faces" if you're looking for real cosmetic help. It's much more thorough in guiding you through your make-up application. This one only proved to be useful if you're interested in Kevin's relationships and experiences with the celebrities he's worked on. Large, beautiful pictures though!

5.0 out of 5 stars From a Modern Makeup Master, September 7, 1997
This review is from: The Art of Makeup (Hardcover)
I have followed Aucoin's work very closely, and as a professional makeup artist, I can say that he has picked up the brush where Way Bandy put it down. If you are a professional makeup artist, beauty/fashion photographer, model, or makeup maven, this is definitely the book to own. It has page after page of some of the industry's most sought-after faces, captured wearing some of Aucoin's best artwork. The makeup styles transcend time, yet he does manage to associate certain "looks" with specific decades. Besides supermodels, actresses and other famous faces, the book also includes faces that represent the "real" woman--including an astonishing makeover for his mother. Laid out in traditional coffee-table book style, the book is also a tremendous resource. There are a few step-by-step makeups, as well as a generous helping of tips, tricks and pointers. In addition to the stunning photography, the book is also pleasant to read. There is his wonderful "how I made it" story, as well as personal stories about encounters with his rich and famous "canvases". There is a down-to-earth quality that emanates from the words, and this was confirmed when I got the chance to meet Kevyn personally during a book signing. He's not only a tremendously talented makeup artist, but a fantastic person as well

1.0 out of 5 stars Does not show you techniques rather it just shows pictures, June 28, 2003

Does not show you techniques rather it just shows pictures! After buying this book- I was very disappointed since I thought it will show me makeup tips and tricks, rather it just shows displays of women's faces. You will waste your money on purchasing this book.

More for the aspiring makeup artist than the layperson. Good, but not a lot of everyday, practical information for the career woman. More for special occasions or specialized techniques. Lots of beautiful pictures featuring famous people made up in different styles.

I bought this book thinking that it would help me learn to apply makeup, professionally. The picutres are dramatic, but there is no advise for everyday people.

4.0 out of 5 stars True art in make up, October 4, 2005
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Art of Makeup (Paperback)
While his other books are more of a how to on make up, this is more of an art book than a guide. Kevyn Aucoine was a master of the art, no question, and he made some of the most beautiful faces ever captured on film. The average so and so will never use things like face tape, false eyelashes, and spirit gum. I'm one of the rare few who isn't in theater and uses those things on occation for a fancy dress occation! You have to know what you're doing for some of these looks. Plus, the finished product was meant to be photographed rather than seen by the public in a normal setting. Enjoy the finished products for what they are, but take care if and when putting together.
