Review

"A great visual aid with large accessible photographs from which to work when a live model is not available."  —Rhiannon Mercer, MFA, artist and teacher, Abuquerque, New Mexico

"Larger images, full natural color and the greater range of models make this very close to the drawing lab experience."  —Robert Rhoades, professor of fine arts, College of the Redwoods

"Will be extremely useful to a wide range of artists: painters, sculptors and digital animators."  —Virginia Maksymowicz, associate professor of art, Franklin & Marshall College

"An artist wishing to paint the human body in its entirety would be well served by [this] book."  —Jeriah Hildwine, MFA, painter, Hoffberger School of Painting, Maryland Institute College of Art

Product Description

Artists looking to supplement a live model class or hone their skills from the comfort of home are provided with a solid pictorial guide to the human form in this detailed reference. Nearly 200 crisp photographs portray a diverse group of male and female models from a variety of angles in 52 classically inspired poses. Precise lighting reveals otherwise hidden areas of the models and illustrates rich shadowing and tone, while an anatomical study, inspired by da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, presents detailed proportional references for each model.

5.0 out of 5 stars Make sure you get the CD as well as the book, November 26, 2007
This is an excellent resource for live model anatomy. In the CD you can turn the model around 360 degrees to get virtually any view. You can zoom into the photo and get perfect detail. Lighting is good as well. What a great find!

5.0 out of 5 stars Art Models 2, June 5, 2007
I like the fact that book was done in hardcover but it's not too heavy so I can carry it with me and use it wherever I find time to sketch. Also, the large photos make it possible to sketch directly from the book with pretty good detail. If I'm in my studio with a computer, the photos on disk are even bigger and there's a few extra that aren't in the book. (they also have a version without the disk, so if you're thinking of buying it double check which one you're looking at)

The poses have captions that mention a piece of art with a person in a similar pose. I looked some of them up on the internet to see how other artists actually used similar poses, that made the book more interesting.

Because of the large photos and the ability to work right from the book, I think this is the best book of it's kind yet.

Other books you might look at include the "Virtual Pose" series and the first [[ASIN:0976457334 Art Models]).

5.0 out of 5 stars What a difference, October 10, 2007
By Ian "Ian P" (Footscray, Victoria Australia) - See all my reviews
I made the mistake of purchasing the first effort in this series and was so disappointed that I nearly gave this one a miss. Luckily I did not.

The images are exceptionally clear, they are of poses that are relevant to nude sculpture (largely), are not censored or smudged and are of exceptional clarity and high resolution - on the DVD.

Printed on an A3 printer, the sharpness and detail of the images are just plain brilliant. I now wait with anticipation for the next in the series. This kind of publication will never replace a live model, but when one is not available, they are certainly next best.
