interesting book with good advice for about finances and life,
This review is from: The Art of Money Getting (Paperback)
We all know PT Barnum for this circus. What we don't know is the man behind the circus. This book shares some insight into that. There is a lot more depth than you'd expect. He is more than "a sucker is born every minute" (which he didn't even say, by the way). What you get here is his philosophy of work, money, and life. Good advice you may have heard before but interesting in this concept. Like staying out of dept, for example. Over 100 years old and it still applies today. Finding your path, treating people well, etc. I got a lot more out of this than I expected and it gave me new insight as to the man PT Barnum was.

Humorous yet practical business wisdom.,
This review is from: Art of Money Getting (Paperback)
Phineas Taylor Barnum (July 5, 1810 - April 7, 1891), American showman who is best remembered for his entertaining hoaxes and for founding the circus that eventually became Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus.
In Brooklyn, New York in 1871, he established "P.T. Barnum's Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan, and Circus", a traveling amalgamation of circus, menagerie and museum of "freaks", which by 1872 was billing itself as "The Greatest Show on Earth". There's a sucker born every minute" is a phrase often credited to P.T. Barnum. However, when Barnum's biographer tried to track down when Barnum had uttered this phrase, all of Barnum's friends and acquaintances told him it was out of character. Barnum's credo was more along the lines of "there's a customer born every minute" -- he wanted to find ways to draw new customers in all the time because competition was fierce and people bored easily Barnum wrote several books, including The Humbugs of the World (1865), Struggles and Triumphs (1869), and his Autobiography (first in 1854, and later editions including 1869). The Art of Money Getting is really the story of how to run a sales organization by understanding the mind and tastes of your primary customer base. Barnum is a treat to read and is never boring! I highly recommend his books.

A Lifestyle Classic,

This review is from: The Art of Money Getting (with linked TOC) (Kindle Edition)
A superb book and absolutely essential reading for anyone serious about making a success in business, or indeed a success in life in general. There are indeed many books about self motivation and success on the market and some are very good indeed, but this one stands out and should be a tool in every serious minded entrepreneurs arsenal. I can also recommend Napoleon Hill's classic Think and Grow Rich and anyone into sales and marketing, check out Simon Ashley Richmond's WRITE AGAIN VOL 1, not strictly a business book, but what bizarre ideas that man has for persistent sales tactics.

The Art of Money Getting (also known as "Golden Rules for Making Money) by P.T. Barnum is another one of my Kindle Reader book acquisitions. It was free and when I downloaded it I assumed it would be more of a book of humor than anything. Of course my assumption was based on authorship. I was surprised to find that this was a book of serious but easy to read practical sense advice about personal finance.
Written in 1880 The Art of Getting Money is a must read for anyone wanting to make progress in their financial situation. Barnum writes this volume in a way that makes the reader feel like they are listening to the grandpa share good common sense and wisdom with them. What Barnum writes is not complicated, difficult to understand or even hard to implement. Even though it was written over 100 years ago, the advice is still applicable today. For example ... I read the kindle edition on vacation.
* Kindle layout is perfect. * Timeless advice from a timeless icon in entertainment. * Well written and a glimpse into how certain things in the past are still relevant in the modern age- and money getting is one of them.

A lot of these books about getting rich (or at least getting richer) repeat the same ideas, over and over again.
1. Save part of your income and invest it. 2. Make the decision: do you actually want to BE rich, or do you just want to LOOK rich? If it's the former, do NOT buy that Mercedes-Benz; keep your old Honda for another ten years and put the car payments in the bank. 3. Do the job which best suits your abilities. 4. If you have something good to offer, tell people. Advertise. 5. Honesty and respect for the customer are always the best policies. In American folklore, P. T. Barnum has become something of a legendary hoaxster --- and nothing could be farther from the truth. He provided genuine entertainment, and got rich doing it. In a way, he was the Walt Disney of his time. If you want to glimpse his real character, read this book. It's short, sweet, and to the point.

I have heard of PT Barnum, I mean seriously, who hasn't? His famous quote "There is a sucker born every minute" is known by almost everyone. I always thought he was a shady circus hawker trying to rip off kids of the dimes in their pockets so they could see the bearded lady. After reading this book, I may have to reconsider my assumption.
I came across this book while trying out new apps on my DROID X It has a Kindle reader app, so I was looking for books to try. I found this one for free. Yes, free. I must say when I saw the free price I thought "Well I am probably going to get what I paid" but I was very surprised to find this gem of a book. There is a lot of value here. There are many lessons in this book. Do not get into debt. Do not co-sign loans without getting collateral, which is there because he feels money that comes too easily is soon lost, and that means you lose too because you are guaranteeing the loan. Treat people well. Do what you are meant to do, or at least do what interests you. Do what you know about. Do you want to be rich, or just appear to be rich? If you are looking to be a success in business, or a success in life, read this book. If you have been trying to succeed, read this book and try to figure out which rule of PT's you are breaking, and get to fixing it. This is a very short book and can be easily read in one sitting, even if you are a slow reader and move your lips while you read. Plus with the "free" price tag, you cannot afford not to read this book. Now I need to find some other books on PT Barnum, because he sounds like a very interesting person.

If you're business owner, marketer, or sell products to people, you can probably benefit from PT Barnum's book the Art of Money Getting. It's truly amazing how little things change over the years. This is an easy read, and a great addition to your collection. The particular edition is edited and formatted beautifully, and has a great introduction. Intriguing to the most,
This review is from: The Art Of Money Getting (Hardcover)
I read this tiny book in one "sitting." What a read! The chapters were short, concise, and easily understandable. The great thing with PT Barnum is that his words either make complete sense or none at all. Fortunately, greater than 97% of this book falls into the former, and his writing style is very direct and especially poignant in its 19th century English.
Reading other reviews on this book did not prepare me accurately for what to expect. This book was more of an "eye-opener" for me than I ever thought it would be. I highly recommend that every person buy this book and even child given or read this book. It could handily be the best investment of all time. And what morals this country would have again... There is also a paperback copy available from Amazon for $2.99, which if you can forgive a few typos, I suggest you buy. Unfortunately most readers may not comprehend this until after they've bought and read the hardcover. |
