5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I've been listening to guitar music all my life. I grew up in Seattle, a hot-bead for music...Andy McKee is simply the best musician I have ever seen or heard on the acoustic guitar. I first learned about him on "youtube." There are a dozen or so videos of him playing songs he wrote and/or has covered. I'm glad I saw him play, because I had to see what I was hearing...

2.0 out of 5 stars Technically amazing - musically uninteresting
I gave it one listen and gave it away to a friend .... a huge disappointment. I understand what Don Ross and a few others have had to say - but six string mastery aside there was nothing there for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, January 10, 2007

I've been listening to guitar music all my life. I grew up in Seattle, a hot-bead for music...Andy McKee is simply the best musician I have ever seen or heard on the acoustic guitar. I first learned about him on "youtube." There are a dozen or so videos of him playing songs he wrote and/or has covered. I'm glad I saw him play, because I had to see what I was hearing to believe it. I didn't know such sound was possible out of one guitar. It sounds as though he's playing lead, rhythm, bass and percussion all by himself. Amazing skill, topped only by the fact that he has composed each and every piece on this CD.

Not only is his music novel, it's wonderful to listen to on several levels. Songs like "Art of Motion" and "Drifting" are fast-paced and fun...you'll find yourself drumming along on your desk/knee/steering wheel uncontrollably. On the flipside, "Into the Ocean" and "Shanghai" are utterly soothing and will relax you.

I cannot recommend this CD and this musician enough. Ever since I was first exposed to his music, I've been tirelessly browsing the internet looking for new music he has written or songs he has covered ("Africa" is amazing...see "youtube"). If you're a fan of dynamic and excellent guitar music, buy this CD as well as anything else with his name on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply amazing., February 4, 2007

Little Green Footballs posted his YouTube video of 'For My Father'. If the proponents of Digital Rights Management get their way, I never would have heard this amazing guitarist. I just bought this album.

This musician's compositions and playing waters my soul. Andy, thank you for sharing your gifts.

I have listened to this almost daily since I first saw Andy McKee on Yahoo and decided to purchase. Some absolutely incredible acoustic Guitar. I highly recommend this to anyone, and especially those who may play a little or are learning guitar. See what the instrument can really do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant acoustic work from a modern master, April 2, 2007
This review is from: Art of Motion (Audio CD)
Andy McKee has arrived on the acoustic guitar scene and he's done it with style. Not only has he shown his influences in his playing with the percussion/harmony/melody style popular of late, but has also brought his own lyrical melody writing into show here, along with fantastic harmonisation and composition.
Along with several other guitarists of the same genre (Antoine Dufour for example), Andy Mckee has set out to push the technical limits of the instrument whilst at the same time making sure to retain the sense of musicality that can sometimes be lost with a little too much concentration on virtuosic skill.

For me, Mckee blends the two aspects of his playing together perfectly and manages to produce music that is technically very difficult whilst still producing a melody you can sing along to. No other song is this shown in more than my favourite of his, 'Drifting'

A brilliant, technically minded album that's guaranteed to be enjoyed over and over again and guaranteed to put McKee firmly on the acoustic map.

5.0 out of 5 stars For my listening pleasure...!, March 2, 2007
This review is from: Art of Motion (Audio CD)
My son, who is the guitarist in our family, came across a video of Andy McKee playing "Drifting" and we watched in fascination. It was amazing to see and hear what this man could do with his guitar! Needless to say, my son purchased this CD soon afterwards. Now I listen to it on my morning drive to work and while I quietly sit alone at my desk. The music just flows...I'll have this CD worn out in no time!

Love this collection of songs. Sounds like heaven to my ears. His songwriting skills with melodic hooks paint beautiful imageries in my mind. Looking forward to purchase his other albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Sensational, July 3, 2010

Andy McKee is without question the finest acoustic guitar player I have ever heard, although I may have a bias because he is from my home state of Kansas. I first discovered Andy's videos on the internet in 2007, so I am glad to see that modern technology (read Youtube) has assisted an up and coming folk guitarist to spread his skilled music.

I'm no expert on guitar playing, but I can discern that this man is truly talented. The way he utilizes the base of his guitar as a percussion instrument is impressive. It makes me amazed only one man is playing. In my opinion, Andy is a cut above the average guitarist in execution, style, and originality.

This CD is great when I need a relaxing break from work, school, and the pressures of everyday life. I recommend Africa and Drifting as specific tranquil antidotes to stress and tension. The harmony is so soothing.

4.0 out of 5 stars A unique acoustic guitarist, February 8, 2008
This review is from: Art of Motion (Audio CD)
I've been a fan of Leo Kotkke and Michael Hedges for many many years. I've learned to play some of Kottke's simpler pieces on 6 and 12-string guitar. I just discovered this CD by Andy McKee and I like it a lot. He has amazing technique. His music reminds me of Don Ross for it's percussive attack and some of the funky grooves. It occasionally sounds a bit like Alex de Grassi in the melodic content and harmonization. Highly recommended.

Fantastic riffs. Now, if this guy could sing and play the same stuff... Wow! I wish I had time to learn this style of playing, but I encourage anyone who has that dream to go for it. This guy has my money for any future CDs, if they are as good as this one.
