5.0 out of 5 stars SPECTACULAR, October 28, 2007
This review is from: The Art of Nature: Jellies (DVD)
I purchased this DVD at the Monterey Bay Aquarium after seeing their jellyfish exhibits and can tell you the dvd

on a large screen TV looks better than the real exhibit at the aquarium. Simply awesome. Beautiful photography and great music.

I soon purchased four more of these DVDs as gifts and in the ultimate act of lunancy seriously considered trading up my 42-inch plasma for a 50-inch one to better see JUST this DVD. My friends whom I have given a copy of the DVD love it also, although I must admit seeing it on the 25-inch regular TV of one of these friends doesn't really do the jellyfish justice.

I work from home and keep this DVD going a good part of the day - from time to time I take a few minutes to stare at the screen and take in the music -- pure therapy.

I cannot recommend this DVD highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like a mini escape to an underwater dreamscape!, May 8, 2008

This review is from: The Art of Nature: Jellies (DVD)
Length:: 1:16 Mins

I first saw this DVD playing on a huge flat screen in a restaurant. I found it mesmerizing and felt I had to get it. I finally got my copy and have to say that it adds to the ambiance of any space and not only serves as a stunning background, but also as a source of escapism and retreat. I highly recommend this to anyone who appreciates the beauty of nature and the benefits of 'getting lost,' even for just a moment.

5.0 out of 5 stars TV without a story..., March 10, 2009
By
This review is from: The Art of Nature: Jellies (DVD)
...for a change. This is not a documentary, nor was it made to accompany a special exhibit. It is simply what it is: a high definition video loop of well-lit jellyfish ambulating over a dark background. If you understand this before purchasing it, there will be no disappointment. In fact, far from it. This is utilizing a TV screen for something quite different than what it is normally for: ambience art, a background, something to accompany whatever activity you may wish to be involved in without the relentless interruption of dialogue.

Ambient entertainment, be it visual or audio, should be interesting enough to keep your attention should you choose to watch it, but easy to ignore should you choose not to. Consider it for what it is: slowing moving/evolving art. As in any museum or picture book, the viewer should not expect the art to talk or tell a narrative story. Such is the case with this DVD. This is a pleasant viewing experience, able to viewed frequently without ever becoming boring.

Nuts and bolts: This DVD will automatically loop (although many modern players have a repeat function). That said, without a timing readout, the loop is so seamless, you'd never know when it happens. You have the option of different music accompaniment, including "new age" and classical. The selections provided here are pretty generic, but if you are picky about what you listen to and don't like what it comes with, you can choose no music and play your own CDs instead or listen in silence. Also, while not well promoted, this disc also comes with "bonus" loops featuring ambient skies and water scenes, which are also extraordinarily soothing. Finally, you don't need a flat screen TV to enjoy this; it works just fine on "old-style" tube monitors as well.

Overall, this is highly recommended to anyone who can see the potential of a TV monitor being used as something beyond strictly a story-telling device... using it as an art form instead.
