Book Description

March 2000 Fenimore Art Museum, New York State Historical Association
Art of the North American Indians is a sumptuous and comprehensive examination of Native American art. While the collection it records began with a personal interest on the part of Eugene and Clare Thaw in Native art featuring the American flag, it soon grew beyond that theme, as they sought to create a representative collection of masterpieces to be given to the public. The result is an extraordinary assemblage of rare and important examples of American Indian art. Objects date from 500 B.C. to the present day, and give an effective and comprehensive overview of the highest artistic levels of American Indian culture throughout North America.

The book includes general introductions for each of the eight culture areas -- Woodlands, Plains, Southwest, California, Great Basin, Northwest Coast, Northern Athapaskan, and Arctic -- as well as 34 regional sections. Superb color photographs by John Bigelow Taylor of 260 objects are accompanied by detailed discussions, and 510 black-and-white photographs of the remaining objects are interspersed throughout the text. The majority of works are from the historic period, but both ancient and contemporary pieces are also included.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Eugene V. Thaw and his wife, Clare, became enamoured of Native American art in the 1960s after indulging in a little collection of Native pieces featuring representations of American flags. They went on to build a beautiful and well-rounded collection of pieces from all areas of Native America, viewing them purely as art objects. They did not build their collection by traveling in the field and chatting with the artists but bought from traders, dealers, Sotheby's, and individuals, sometimes driving hard bargains. Eventually, they found a home for their purchases at the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, NY. This catalog of the collection's nearly 800 pieces is divided geographically, and experts (Janet Catherine Berlo, coauthor of Oxford's Native North American Art, and 14 others) have written good summaries of the culture of each area. Each object is represented by a simple, very classic photo (260 in color) with detailed catalog information and excellent background on the color prints. While a bit top-heavy on Northwest Coast and Arctic art and devoid of information on how these objects were actually made, this is a very good introductory overview for general library use.DGay W. 5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece!, April 28, 2000

This review is from: Art of the North American Indians: The Thaw Collection (Fenimore Art Museum, New York State Historical Association) (Hardcover)
This is no mere exhibition catalogue. It is a superb book- thoroughly researched, well-written and beautifully photographed- really a one-volume encyclopedia of Native North American art. The inclusion of provenance is essential and an important ethical model that others in Native American studies should follow.

A major achievement.

3.0 out of 5 stars I was disappointed, February 11, 2011
This review is from: Art of the North American Indians: The Thaw Collection (Fenimore Art Museum, New York State Historical Association) (Hardcover)
Although it is quite thorough in covering all aspects of North American Indian Art and includes all the major Indian tribes, the illustrations are very disappointing. I don't see how you can really discuss for example Acoma, Jemez or other pueblo pottery by showing examples only in black and white. The same can said for Navajo, Zuni or Hopi jewelry and certainly kachinas, and to a lesser extent, basketry. Even some of the beadwork (not all) is shown in black and white. Considering the price of this volume, I cannot recommend buying it unless you get a really good deal second-hand.

1.0 out of 5 stars Most disappointing collection catalog in years, March 25, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Art of the North American Indians: The Thaw Collection (Fenimore Art Museum, New York State Historical Association) (Hardcover)
Over the years I've been an avid collector of every museum or exhibition catalogs on North American Indian Art -- but this one is the biggest disappointment. While provenance histories can be of importance for the reader, here it provides little meaning and appears to primarily satisfy the collectors/dealers' vanities. Oftentimes provenance entries are incomplete. The lengthy caption reveal very little new or interesting information and for the most part contain meaningless blah-blah just to pad the space around the pictures.

Layout and design is pedestrian, and for that price one would have expected to find all items in color.

A missed opportunity, too bad!
