Go on a journey with Abe and friends!,

This review is from: The Art of Oddworld Inhabitants (Paperback)
What can i say? This is a beautiful, beautiful book. You cannot miss on this one. Love the game? There is plenty of info about the creation of the characters, enviroments. Love design and artbooks? The illustrations and CG work in this book are excellent. Love books in general? The quality of the prints are stunning. I own this book for about a week now and there hasn't been a day that i haven't wandered around in Oddworld. I bet it will stay that way for a while. Go ahead and take this journey too.

As art books go, this is simply as good as it gets. The book is beautifully printed, the pages are large and vivid, and the art is simply second to none. Aside from that, there's just nothing more to say. If you like the Oddworld games, or you just like good art, you can't go wrong here. It's very, very hard to imagine an art book being any higher quality than this.

Great for the Oddworld fans and game artists,

This review is from: The Art of Oddworld Inhabitants (Paperback)
This is a book published in 2005 and is in very limited availability at sane prices. When I saw it at a local bookshop, I grabbed it immediately. The full title is The Art of Oddworld Inhabitants: The First Ten Years 1994 - 2004. Oddworld is a comprehensive fictional universe presented in video game form, created by game developers Oddworld Inhabitants under the direction of Lorne Lanning. This art book covers a decade of art work spanning a few game titles which are Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee, Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus and Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. There's extensive character coverage with chapters devoted to Abe, Munch and Stranger. That's on top of other concept designs included for all other characters that feature in the games. There are extensive sketches with scribbled notes, 3D renders and full colour illustrations. Also included are concept paintings for the backgrounds, weapons, vehicles and other props for the game. The captions provided describe the world of Oddworld and the ideas behind. It talks about changes in designs, such has the requirement of a three-finger character instead of four fingers because of negative connotations in the Japanese market. The writeup is great and there's something to read on every page. This is a paperback book published by Ballistic Publishing. They have recently released a limited 100 copies folio edition for this book priced at (a whopping) US$170. There are both paperback and hardcover versions for the normal edition. If you're getting, get the hardcover because the binding on the paperback isn't that great, and this book is thick at 256 pages. This book is recommended more for Oddworld fans and game artists. (More pictures are available on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

GET THIS!!,
This review is from: The Art of Oddworld Inhabitants (Paperback)
From the moment you take a look at this book, you know what's in stored for you. The paper is high quality, and the images are awesome!! Each chapter is discussed on the progression of the game and how the art influenced the way it was made.
There are so many concept images in here that'll give you a deeper understanding on why the Oddworld games have been so successful. My apologies if I'm repeating myself. There's just so much to this book that can't be explained in words. Each page is beautifully printed in vibrant colors and every page is laid out perfectly. After reading and looking at this book, I HAD to go back and find my old PS1 games for this and play it just to appreciate it. Although the price is a bit much, it is worth every penny, and this is coming from someone who's been working in art for a very long time.

One of the most inspired books I have had so far.
You will learn how to design, create and present every single visual element for a game production pipeline. This book is full of greate printed pictures that show the design process behind the legendery game. I can say nothing more. It is a great book. Just have it!

My Thoughts,
This review is from: The Art of Oddworld Inhabitants (Paperback)
I received my copy of this book today, and I'm very satisfied with it.
Sure, its expensive, but I guess thats a reasonable price for a 250¬ or so pages book filled with high quality images. There are lots of interesting descriptions and fun facts about the games and the company, and many nostalgic (and never seen before, as far as I know) and artistic images. If you enjoyed this series of games, then this is a book you'd want to buy. |
