This CD could have just as well been called "The Soul of the Oud", but since the music that fills it emerges from a place where instrumental technique has already become a transparent voice for something altogether undefinable, "Art" will do just as well.
Like the other guy said, get it now and profess your gratitude later.
Munir Bachir is known for his mastery of the highly regarded Iraqi style of playing. Many of his albums feature lengthy pieces, while this one has shorter tracks, each exploring a different maqam. Although it works as soothing background and meditation music, it is, foremost, secular art music very similar to Western lute music. This is music worth paying attention to. Invest forty minutes of your time. The liner notes are extensive and informative.
Often in the world music arena one has to have some exposure to various works to enjoy them. This one will be easily assimilated by those who enjoy string instruments. I would recommend sampling the CD before you buy to ensure it is what you are looking for.
