Takes Pencil Drawing to a New Level...,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Art of Pencil Drawing (Collector's Series) (Paperback)
If you really want to see how amazing pencil can look on paper when you have master it, get this book. Gene Franks creates all his own textures with just simple strokes and the drawings come off the page! I used to use a blender for most of my shading. Not any more! It will take alot of practice to be able to even come close to his style, but you will get so many amazed faces when people see what you can do with a simple pencil and a blank sheet of paper. I highly recommend it!

REALIZING THE GREAT POTENTIAL OF PENCIL,
By Carol Gancia (Manila, Philippines) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Art of Pencil Drawing (Collector's Series) (Paperback)
The book contains impressive drawings of Gene Franks in pencil. It offers a wide spectrum of drawing models for the reader-- from toys to cars, animals, portaits and landscapes. By mere study of his drawings, one gets a pretty good idea of the many ways varying pencil strokes maybe used to define the texture of a still life drawing. His drawings look like the real thing, except that they're in black and white. His notes and tips on how to render each drawing are also very helpful to the reader. This book is something you'll keep using for the rest of your drawing career.

I'm just beginning to draw and this book doesn't offer much in the form of directions. It is an awesome book, but if you are just learning this book is to advanced. I will put it on a shelf for now and save it for future use.

Stunning artwork, but not useful as a guide,
By Isa Sanchez (Europe) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Art of Pencil Drawing (Collector's Series) (Paperback)
That Gene Franks is an amazing artist is unquestionable, yet I wouldn't recommend this to the aspirant. It doesn't give much advice on actual techniques, there are no photos to work from, and the writing style is quite monotonous. Having said that, the pictures are a joy to look at, so this gets an extra star for this alone :D

Gene Frank's books are my favorite learn to draw books. This one contains many of his drawings from his other publications. It is fun to go through the steps as he does with each drawing and see your results. Not a lot of words, just what tools he uses and 4 or 5 steps. This is an exceptional book.

It's a very interesting book especially for skilled people using pencil. Few words, many drawings. You can found suggestions about subjects to and how to draw them concisely.

I love the great detail and range of categories in this book. There's a still life section, vehicles, landscape animals and whatnot. It's a longer book and more helpful than other books like this from other publishers that I've seen.

Must Have for the Studio Bookshelf,

This review is from: The Art of Pencil Drawing (Collector's Series) (Paperback)
This book is a great reference to have on the bookshelf of your studio if you're an artist and a great learning tool if you want to be an artist and/or learn to draw. I have several in this Collector's Series; The Art of Basic Drawing, The Art of Drawing Dragons and other Fantasy Creatures and The Art of Drawing People. They are all equally good and permanent books that I'm proud to have in my studio!
