3.0 out of 5 stars A little disappointing, June 12, 2009

This review is from: The Art of Poser and Photoshop: The Official e-frontier Guide (Paperback)
After investing a good amount of money in Photoshop CS 4 and Poser Pro, I was becoming discouraged that there was no instruction available on using these applications together. When I saw the title to this book, I was very excited - it sounded like exactly what I was looking for. It wasn't, exactly. This is a beautiful book. With heavy-duty color plates on nearly every page the graphics are superb; it is amazing that this book is available for less than $30. The tutorial's in this book offered the opportunity to practice the features that both Poser Pro and Photoshop of offer. The author demonstrates the integration of these products by producing some unusual and attractive pieces of computer-generated art. Not unexpectedly (since the book is listed as "The Official e-frontier Guide"), the procedures described in the book utilize exclusively the e-frontier characters (Simon, James, Sidney, etc.). DAZ characters (Victoria, Michael, etc.) - which I and other Poser users prefer - are altogether neglected in this book. Since some of the texturing procedures are different for these characters (DAZ characters are not modified in the Face Room, for example) there were significant portions of this book that I found unhelpful regarding the procedures I wanted to learn. I would very much like to find some instruction on making photorealistic skin and eyes in Photoshop, and this was not discussed in the book. More extensive, straightforward guidance on using Photoshop's tools and filters to produce bump maps, specular maps, transparency maps, and so forth for normal skin and clothing would have been more helpful for my purposes. Disappointments notwithstanding, this is still a good book to learn some new tips and techniques, especially for utilizing 3-D figures in Photoshop. 3 1/2 stars.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, December 16, 2009

Somewhere in the description for this book it should have been made clear that this is for the Extended version of CS4. MUCH of the information in the book relies on the 3d editing capability of CS4 Extended. I have the regular version of Photoshop CS4 and almost half of the tutorials in this book won't work for me.
