Book Description

1602069379 978-1602069374 November 1, 2007
The best way to become a confident, effective public speaker, according to the authors of this landmark book, is simply to do it. Practice, practice, practice. And while you're at it, assume the positive. Have something to say. Forget the self. Cast out fear. Be absorbed by your subject. And most importantly, expect success. "If you believe you will fail," they write, "there is hope for you. You will." DALE CARNEGIE (1888-1955), a pioneer in public speaking and personality development, gained fame by teaching others how to become successful. His book How to Win Friends and Influence People (1936) has sold more than 10 million copies. He also founded the Dale Carnegie Institute for Effective Speaking and Human Relations, with branches all over the world. JOSEPH BERG ESENWEIN (1867-1946) also wrote The Art of Story-Writing, Writing the Photoplay (with Arthur Leeds), and Children's Stories and How to Tell Them.

4.0 out of 5 stars A foundational book on public speaking, July 10, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This dense classic (AoPS) unpacks public speaking topic by topic, providing previous speeches throughout to practice with.

It approaches public speaking from the absolute best perspective: it's not about you, it's about THE MESSAGE!

AoPS also has amazing introductory piece on being courageous.

One major caveat to keep in mind: The style of public speaking has changed in the past +100 years. Gone are the days of three-hour booming oratories by Webster and Beecher. In their stead modern speaking have to be quick-hitting with profound and engaging stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to public speaking, April 2, 2010

This is a really good deal. Nowadays you cannot find such a good book with that price.

The language is a bit dated, but the content is still relevant.

If you need to do any type of public speaking, networking and small talk, pick up this book right away and start skimming.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Major Disappointment Unaffordable!, October 31, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The version I viewed on Amazon is not the same as the version I received today. This is a major disappointment. The version I received is unformatted and set in courier font, with no contrast between textual elements, headings etc. While the cover states that it is a High Quality Paperback version, it is no where near the quality it claims to be. The dense text, set in typewriter style, with page breaks all over the place (for example, headings are found at the bottom of pages and the body text that belongs to the heading is set on a different page), makes the book highly inaccessible. This renders 352 large pages of this book useless. The publisher has done this book a great injustice and Amazon has done its customers a great disservice by not advertising the correct version, especially when the difference between the older version advertised and the one sold is so great. It is quite surprising that in this day and age of high tech desktop publishing programs this book has been allowed to be published in this shabby and user-hostile format. It will take a real effort to wade through this jungle of text to make sense of the valuable information the author presented. Zero Rating!
