5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful expression of women with breast cancer.
I am honored to be one of the artists in this powerful and moving book. At my art exhibits I include Art.Rage.Us and note that the book is in constant use during the shows. So many people are affected by the ravages of cancer. Both this book and the art exhibit are healing for victims, families and friends. The Art.Rage.Us. exhibit will tour the U.S.A. until December...

3.0 out of 5 stars I know of a better book
While this book tells a story, there is too much anger about cancer. Hence the title. "Goddesses Don't Buy Green Bananas" tells this story better and softer.

I cannot read this book without tears. The women are powerful role models. I admire and respect you!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book! Incredible art, amazing women!, January 26, 1999
By A Customer
I love this book. An awesome testimony to the power of the women who have contributed. The art is beautifully poignant, moving, meaningful. I have never had breast cancer, but know and love many women who have (I am an oncologist) and I think this book is an amazing example of the incredible strength, courage, humor and insight of the women who had the guts and grace to not only create the visual and written images but to publish them for all to see. I have shown this book to everyone I can find--the medical students, doctors, nurses and social workers with whom I work at the Massey Cancer Center at VCU in Richmond--I have promised one of my patients to show it to her the next time she is in the clinic. It is so inspiring. Don't even ask me which pieces are my favorites! I love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Powerful and Beautiful Book by Breast Cancer Survivors, February 9, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As a breast cancer survivor, I often look for books that discuss the illness from different perspectives. I have never come across one more powerful than this one. This book is by artists who have had the disease. Artists, writers, poets, actors, photographers, etc. express their feelings about breast cancer through their art.

Each artist has a page or two in the book. There are no holds barred. The power, anguish, rage, and pain come through like a gut punch. However, the power of art to describe and VISUALIZE the disease from the victim's perspective is so different than reading a typical memoir or 'How to Survive Breast Cancer' book. This book shows the imagery created by the feelings. I first saw it in my local breast cancer detection center and have been purchasing it for friends diagnosed with breast cancer ever since.

I want to add that the introduction by Terry Tempest Williams is perfect. She has talked openly on NPR and in her book, 'Refuge', about the scourge that breast cancer has caused on her family. At one point she described her mother and grandmother as 'one-armed amazons' because they both had breast cancer which she believes is due to the nuclear testing in Utah, where she lives.

This book is a must-have for anyone facing the disease or who loves someone diagnosed with breast cancer.
