5.0 out of 5 stars Red hot book
Customer Video Review     Length:: 1:12 Mins
The presentation format is similar to The Art of Vampirella, also from the same publisher Dynamite Entertainment. It includes the history before the gallery. There's no other commentary.

3.0 out of 5 stars ok cover collection
After a short intro which of course I didn't read, the rest of this book is comprised of covers from the dynamite series, as well as the odd preliminary sketch. The covers are grouped by artist, but without any regard to either alphabetical or chronological order, conveniently insuring that finding a particular image will take as long as possible (no, there isn't an...

5.0 out of 5 stars Red hot book, April 19, 2011
This review is from: Art Of Red Sonja HC (Hardcover)
Length:: 1:12 Mins

The presentation format is similar to The Art of Vampirella, also from the same publisher Dynamite Entertainment. It includes the history before the gallery. There's no other commentary.

The selection here seems to have more finesse compared to Art of Vampirella HC. The covers are mostly printed at almost full page, with a few at two-third page sizes overlapping each other - better that than not included. It's mainly cover art. Besides a few dubious inclusion, most illustrations are very beautiful and detailed.

Some of the artists included are Adam Hughes, Alex Ross, Frank Cho, Jim Lee, Mel Rubi, JG Jones, Neal Adams and many more. Although the paintings are group by artists, they aren't arranged alphabetically. There's also no index so it's difficult to find pieces from any particular artist.

A worthy collection for Red Sonja fans.

After a short intro which of course I didn't read, the rest of this book is comprised of covers from the dynamite series, as well as the odd preliminary sketch. The covers are grouped by artist, but without any regard to either alphabetical or chronological order, conveniently insuring that finding a particular image will take as long as possible (no, there isn't an index). So, its just covers, pretty straightforward, what could go wrong? is what you might be thinking. Well, despite the size of the book, the covers are reprinted here at their initial print size, only now with a generous 1 inch maroon border ... except for the covers that are printed 2 or three to a page and partially overlapping each other that is. Then there is the choice of covers - dynamite comissions several covers for each issue so they had a lot to choose from, but it seems as though their main criterion for inclusion in this book was to find the more awkward and poorly done covers and highlight them as much as possible while giving short shrift to the better ones. Paul Renaud's covers, which are probably the best, get sqeezed three to a page, while mel rubi enjoys several glorious 2 page spreads for his wrap around covers( these are virtually the only covers in the book printed larger than standard size). Its a bit of a head scratcher. I realize Rubi is one of the main artists, but so is Homs and his covers are largely passed over. I m probably making this sound worse than it is. There are some nice covers by greg tocchini, liam sharp (too small), j g jones and others.
