Book Description

Softlight Ink May 13, 2000
"When you read this book, remember that you’re not just reading one man’s story. Kurt, by virtue of his unique connections to the artistic community, speaks with a rare authority about taking risks for your art, investing in your own aspirations, and expanding your artistic horizons. Kurt’s view of the events of his life are all interpreted by their proximity to his art. In that regard, this book represents a rare opportunity indeed." - From the introduction by Cole Weston

Art in Residence features portraits of eighty influential West Coast artists, including Ansel Adams, Cole Weston, Eleanor Antin, Jock Sturges, Robert Arneson, Judy Chicago, and more. Each portrait captures the subject in his or her work space and is accompanied by a brief statement from the artist. The photographs are more than stunning portraits—the intense intimacy of Fishback’s style, as well as his personal relationships with his subjects, make each one an eloquent visual biography.

Fishback’s style is influenced by his past work as a sculptor; the work of his father, photographer Glen Fishback; and by his close personal and artistic relationships with Edward Weston and Ansel Adams.

About the Author

Kurt Edward Fishback, son of photographer Glen Fishback and godson of photographer Edward Weston, grew up as part of the photographic community in Northern California during the 1940s and ‘50s. Mentors and friends of his family included Ansel Adams, Edna Bullock, Joseph Meunch, and Ruth Bernhard. Despite his immersion in the world of photography, Fishback began his artistic career studying ceramic sculpture at Sacramento City College in 1961. He first began to experiment with photography in 1962 as a way to document his experiences with other sculptors, but it was not until 1973, when his father invited him to teach at the Glen Fishback School of Photography, that photography became Kurt Fishback’s primary mode of expression.

Kurt continues to teach photography while maintaining his own artistic career. He has contributed work to various charitable organizations, and his articles have appeared in such publications as Camera and Darkroom, Photo Techniques, and Lenswork Quarterly. His first major, one-person exhibit was held at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1982. He is currently represented by Roslyn Special Editions in Roslyn, Washington; the Photographer’s Gallery in Palo Alto, California; the Camera Obscura Gallery in Denver, Colorado; and by the Solomon Dubnick Gallery in Sacramento, California. He lives in Sacramento with his wife, Joan, who collected the short narratives and statements that accompany the photographs in his first book, Art in Residence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Artists in Their Environment, July 13, 2000

I met Kurt about 5 years ago. He was teaching a class at The Workshops in Rockport, Maine. I was immediately impressed with Kurt's work and his uncanny ability to capture the essence of his subject at the defining moment. Kurt's vision is timeless, and this work demonstrates his ability to make powerful images with only Tri-X and available light. This is an excellent book for the serious amateur photographer who wants to refine his own photographic vision. You won't be disappointed.

This book is both very beautiful and informative. Kurt's images allow you to really see the artist and the surroundings that help them create their work. Kurt looks at both their outer body and their inner soul.

I highly recommend this book for any person who loves both Art and Photography
