Jazz Romp, July 30, 2009
This review is from: Art of Rhythm (Audio CD)
I'm a fan from way back of Miles and Herbie, etc, and this is a somewhat lighter version of the jazz ensemble work we all know and love. It's a little of everything - more jazz than Latin, but at times there are brief passages of metal drum, acoustic guitar and Latin tempo. Very relaxing and an easy listen without the irritating use of synthesizer. Very nice.

Brooding, moody, rich, challenging orchestration, September 14, 2010
This review is from: Art of Rhythm (Audio CD)
Flugelhorn and trumpet virtuoso Tom Harrell, the composer and most important (but not the only important) soloist of this album manages to deliver interesting
jazz orchestrations imbued with all sorts of Carribean and Latin instruments and orchestral principles...
I believe this album to be equally appealing to hard-core jazz fans and to those in search of experiment, cross-overing or (postmodern?) mixing of genres.
In addition to Tom, the soloists are Greg Tardy (cl, ts), Bryan Carrott (marimba), Romero Lubambo (g), Dewey Redman (ts), Danilo Perez (p), Mike Stern (g), David Sanchez (ss), David Finck (b), Duduka Da Fonseca (dm);
non-soloing participants of these sessions include Regina Carter (vi), Ugonna Okegwo (b), Gary Smulyan (bs, b-cl), Leon Parker (dm, perc.)...
