The Art and Science of Teaching: A comprehensive framework for effective instruction
The book focuses on the elements of effective teaching. The author presents a comprehensive model of effective instruction in the form of 10 questions. These questions are: (1) What will I do to establish and communicate learning goals, track student progress and celebrate success? (2) What will I do to help students effectively interact with new knowledge? (3) What will I do to help students practice and deepen their understanding of new knowledge? (4) What will I do to help students generate and test hypotheses about new knowledge? (5) What will I do to engage students? (6) What will I do to establish or maintain classroom rules or procedures? (7) What will I do to recognize and acknowledge adherence to classroom rules and procedures? (8) What will I do to establish and maintain effective relationships with students? (9) What will I do to communicate high expectations for all students? (10) What will I do to develop effective lessons organized into cohesive unit? The above questions represent a logical planning sequence for effective instructional design and they have been discussed in the ten chapters of the book. The book has figures, diagrams, tables, rubrics, and graphic organizers. The book is easy to read and reflects current research and thinking on different aspects of classroom teaching such as teacher expectations, questioning, lesson design, and reflection.

This book has very good strategies for both new and seasoned educators. New teachers will appreciate the immediacy by which the strategies can be implemented in the classroom. Seasoned teachers will appreciate the reminders of strategies that may have been used over the years.

This review is from: The Art and Science of Teaching: A Comprehensive Framework for Effective Instruction (Paperback)
Don't waste a second reading this crap. There's nothing here. This man wouldn't last five seconds in a real classroom. Has no idea what's going on, nothing practical. Mindless research, graphs and charts for the sake of filling pages and collecting a paycheck. Scary waste of paper, print and time. Was there an editor who looked at this ponderous, incomprehensible pile of nonsense? If guys like this are on the payroll, no wonder college costs are out of sight.

I used this book for a graduate course and really enjoyed this book. Marzano shares such wonderful information for practitioners. He discusses the what and the how in reaching students by teaching responsively. I think this book should be on every educator's bookshelf!

I am so glad I purchased this book! Marzano is very thorough when it comes to "showing" how to put an idea into practice. His books all fit together hand-in-glove. This one is down to the bare bones of "why" we teachers should do things a certain way.

If you chewed on this book it might be more inspiring than it is as a read. Wow! You mean that encouraging students, giving them homework, and having them reflect on their lessons actually has beneficial effects? I'm shocked! It's a good thing that these notions are presented with lots of proof from academic studies with lots of scientific graphs, or I would never believe them. Sheesh. Of course there are some good suggestions but they are not presented very well, so unless you can relate to some of the ideas already they probably won't leave much of an impression on you. There have to be better books out there.I'd like to update my review by saying anyone thinking of going into K-12 teaching should have their head examined. Our district doesn't want to pay for nurses so now teachers have to insert suppositories into the anuses of students after epileptic fits. This is only one of the few medical duties we are expected to perform in order to save the district money. Imagine the potential for litigation. Lawyers litigate in the school system over nothing as it is. Be prepared to have some student come after you in the future because you crushed his hopes of becoming the first man on the moon. Do not try to defend yourself if you are physically attacked by a student, you will be to blame. There is no protection for you as a teacher. The Union? Forget it. Class size has almost doubled as a way to cut jobs even if you still want this completely masochistic career path. In the near future there are more planned layoffs here. The list of pure crap goes on and on but consider that even after being paid less than any other job that has the equivalent amount of education, and tons more busy work like BTSA even after that, we are blamed for all the problems that exist in the school system. It is a mantra you will be subjected to over and over again, and you will be expected to repeat it and believe that if only you were a better teacher, the rest of the world won't make a difference and the schools will be perfect. Teachers are blamed for everything. That's a fact. How long do you think you will be able to handle that? Privatization for profit of schools is rapidly becoming the future of education and you will be further treated as a grunt, no more respected than the guy standing next to the Home Depot except he will be making more money in actual time spent/money paid terms. You will be given unending, ever-changing paper work and procedures, all with new fancy names and acronyms. The one perk of good health insurance will soon be a thing of the past soon as well. Also consider that the last survey taken, when times were good before the economic mess that exists now, that had sixty percent of all first and second year California teachers quitting their jobs due mainly to administration misery. The situation is now twice as bad and this number has to be somewhere over seventy percent. You want to be a teacher? Honestly, if you don't know the facts of the field you are going into, head toward another career path as quickly as you can. This country has no respect for teachers and they take advantage of the fact that people who want to go into teaching have good hearts. You are taken advantage of because of this and worse, used as a whipping boy for the failure of the students. Nobody mentions the responsibility of parents, administration, or the students themselves. You still want to go into teaching? Have your head examined first. If you still want to teach, go move to another country, like China, were teachers are still respected. They are going to be eating our lunch soon anyway.

yawn,
This review is from: The Art and Science of Teaching: A Comprehensive Framework for Effective Instruction (Paperback)
I absolutely dislike this book. It is so completely packed with 'filler' material that it takes a great degree of concentration just to decifer the content contained within each chapter. I compare reading this book to opening a big box, only to find a smaller box inside, and a smaller one inside that. Once you finally get to the center box, you open it up only to realize that the present is something you already have. Through its use of irrevelant statistics and worthless graphs, this book ranks as one of the worst I have been forced to read.
