An excellent anthology for short story lovers.,

This anthology brings you 130 of the greatest stories ever written, from the classic to contemporary. It is a tome of 1650 pages illustrating the evolution of short story from King James Bible to Alice Munro's "Floating Bridge" (2001). Just to give some examples my personal greats are below:The Overcoat (1840) by Nikolai Gogol The Cask of Amontillado (1846) by Edgar Alan Poe Bartleby, the Scrivener (1853) by Herman Melville The Necklace (1884) by Guy de Maupassant The Death of Ivan Ilyich (1886) by Leo Tolstoy An occurance at Owl Creek Bridge (1891) by Ambrose Bierce The Yellow Wallpaper (1892) by Charlotte Perkins Gilman The Lady with the Dog (1899) by Anton Chekhov A Hunger Artist (1924) by Franz Kafka Emma Zunz (1949) by Jorge Luis Borges A&P (1961) by John Updike Continuity of Parks (1967) by Julio Cortazar A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings (1968) by Gabriel Garcia Marquez There are special essays, helpful tools for reading such asan introductory chapter on approaching the short story and understanding the elements of fiction, a glossary of literary terms and a full novella - Henry James's Daisy Miller. Highly recommended if you want a survey of the Short Story.

Would you think that anyone would be able to sit down and enjoy a textbook as pleasurable reading? I was quite surprised and delighted that this is what happened with THE ART OF THE SHORT STORY. That is the magic of good writing. The selections kept me absorbed and I was actually sorry to see the book end. If you want to spend time with some excellent writers, pick up a copy of this book. Don't you deserve it?
