5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful and Beautiful and USEFUL January 30, 2011
By Sher
Having taken several of Pam's online classes, I was excited to see her techniques and inspirational color palette memorialized in print. Art at the Speed of Life concentrates on providing artists with a road map to incorporating art into their every day lives with helpful instructions on creating art in a more efficient manner. Interspersed throughout the book are chapters from some of my other favorite mixed-media artists and they share how to incorporate and manage an artful life in our normal routines as well. Of course it wouldn't be the perfect Mixed-Media book if it didn't also include methods on building backgrounds, adding focal points, and interesting imagery. I'm excited to try many of the techniques, such as toilette papier-mache and beeswax collage (encaustics). Instructions are clearly written and supporting photographs and sketches are meaningful and helpful. Just looking at the contents page, I have counted 22 projects/techniques and I can't wait to sit down and try them all. For me it always comes back to one question, would I buy this book again 5 years from now? For Pam's new book, the answer would definitely be YES!

5.0 out of 5 stars Curl up with a blankie February 2, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Just received my copy of this book in time for our horrid winter weather. It was such a delight to curl up and read. Lovely eye candy and fun techniques. I especially enjoyed the practical advice (do batches of backgrounds) and accessible products (gel hand cleaner transfers) covered in the book. I think that any level of artist could find a lot to like here. And the step outs are particularly detailed which is nice!!

3.0 out of 5 stars time management and creativity. March 7, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The only sections of the book I found tedious were the pop psychologists especially Suzi Blu. All the nonsense about "am I an artist" has nothing to do with finding the time for keeping an art journal. Why do you need a title?
All this aside there are many techniques such as the paint under technique and excellent suggestions on how to use time wisely like making multiple backgrounds and interesting collages. Many of the contributors have unique ideas and techniques. the illustrations are excellent. This is is a good book for anyone new to visual journaling and and collaging.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now I Get It! June 3, 2011
By Cheryll
This is the Mother Lode for Art Journaling. I have borrowed and read numerous books from the library. I have purchased beautiful books on the subject of Art Journaling that gave me beautiful pictures, but little instruction how to create my own. I just couldn't get a grasp on the concept. NOW with Pam's book, the light bulb has finally turned on! She has shown me a quick and easy way to make my own personal journal from one large piece of paper (instead of buying expensive blank white paged books that blind my eyes and paralyze any creativity). I can choose my own color schemes, textures, and patterns that inspire me whenever I pick one up to archive an event, jot down my hopes and dreams, plan my garden or vacation, even put one together honoring a friend as a gift. Pockets are instantly created to hold special keepsakes and photos for a hidden surprise factor. I can add 3D elements in a moment for embellishment. I can even make several and bind them together when they are finished to have a cohesive larger book. But wait there's MORE...Pam invited other artists to write inspirational short chapters to spur the imagination and keep those creative juices flowing. So you not only get Pam's techniques and point of view, but also those of other established artists. Reading and rereading this book is like watching a favorite movie multiple times and finding something missed in previous viewings. Pam's wonderful easy techniques and her collaboration with other wise artist's make this book a real bang for your buck. Thank you Pam, I think I've found my art niche finally!

3.0 out of 5 stars Scratching (too?) many surfaces May 11, 2011
This book was on the top of my artsy books wishlist since before it was even published, so when a dear friend gave it to me for my birthday I couldn't believe my luck! It's quite possible though that because of all the anticipation my expectations were too high. In any case the book only partially delivered what I expected.

First of all let me say this is by no means a bad book and I wouldn't advice against getting it, but when it comes to tips for incorporating art into your everyday life I think it just scratches the surface. In fact the book scratches way too many surfaces. There is a little something about just about everything a beginning mixed media artist might want to know, but it never goes beyond the little somethings. Most sections are so short that just when you get started to get interested in the subject it already moves on to the next thing.

I feel the book is written the way Carriker works at her art: many things going on at the same time, jumping back and forth, and never really focusing on one thing long enough for it to stick. This may be a wonderful book for people with short attention spans! ;-)

All that being said, there's good stuff too! The book offers many pages written by all sorts of mixed media artists and there are some very nice techniques and ideas shown. There's lots of eye candy too. I think this would be a wonderful book for someone who is new to mixed media or art making in general as it does give an introduction to many aspects of making art.

However if you want more in depth information on the subject of living an artful life and how to incorporate art into your busy schedule, I highly recommend reading Ricë Freeman Zachery's books "Living the creative life" and "Creative time and space".
