4.0 out of 5 stars Lowering the Volume, February 2, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Art of Spiritual Dreaming (Paperback)
I had heard some good things about this book from people I know personally. But when I read some of the reviews posted on Amazon.com, I hesitated. At least two of the reviewers gave it one star and said AWFUL things about it and the author, whose other work they seemed to know and also hated. But they seemed focused on trashing, and I wondered if they had an ax to grind. (Why, one asks oneself, if they hated this author so much already, would they have bought and read this book at all?) Then there were one or two other reviews that gave 5 stars and rhapsodized on about the author and his background--almost as if they were personal friends of his. Then others of the reviews seemed non-hysterical and at least favorable. I wondered what all the commotion was about. Now that I've read the book myself, I can report that I have quite a favorable impression. No, this is not a scientifically structured book by dream researchers, which seemed to be one of the big objections of the outraged trashers. Instead, I'd say it's a bit more like "Conversations With God," or the works of Marianne Williamson, only with a dream orientation. If you're basically uncomfortable with the idea that God (or Spirit) exists and can speak to us or guide us, however subtly, through dreams, you may hate this book--because that is its unabashed premise. But if that idea is something you already believe and trust and are OK with, you may very well come to love this book and find in it a great deal of wisdom for self-development. Each chapter is broken down into a lot of subheadings that I found very easy to browse. And, there are many, MANY examples of ways that dreams can be interpreted intuitively to provide answers to problems and aid in personal spiritual growth. Scientific or not, this book had an authentic and honest feel to it in talking about dreams. I love dreams and dream study, and so did this author. I have strongly recommended it to friends who are interested in exploring dreams from a spiritual perspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dreams are the forgotten road to heaven., January 25, 2000

Joe Federico (Custer, Washington) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Art of Spiritual Dreaming (Paperback)
Harold Klemp's book explains that dreams are your gateway to the inner worlds. He than shares over 50 tips and spiritual exercises to show you how to understand, remember and use your dreams. If you follow the guidlines in the book, they do work. I told my cousin about the book who could almost never remember dreams and he was amazed that he started having vivid dream recall with a direct connection to everyday life. This is the best dream book out there! It gives you specific information on how to remember your dreams and actually do dream travel or soul travel. It is one of the best books I have ever read. I keep it by my bed and do a spiritual exercise before going to sleep. It is truly an adventure!

5.0 out of 5 stars The focus is on SPIRITUAL, January 29, 2000
This review is from: The Art of Spiritual Dreaming (Paperback)
I helped compile The Art of Spiritual Dreaming for the author Harold Klemp from his many talks and writings on the subject. My primary motive was to fill a certain gap in the public literature on dreams - that gap being represented by the word SPIRITUAL in the book's title. There are many books devoted to the interpretation of dreams, to dream work, to experimental research on dreams, to lucid dreaming, and so forth. Many are excellent. But they fall short on the subject of SPIRITUAL dreaming. Klemp's book is based on the premise that dreams are a portal into higher planes of reality, into the spiritual worlds. The book starts right off with the theme that the soul can and does leave the body during sleep, just as it will do permanently one day at the time of death. In these days where accounts of Near Death Experiences are commonplace, the idea of the soul leaving the body to visit higher worlds is a familiar idea to most people. Klemp elaborates on this theme, exploring the wondrous possibilities which this opens up for the dreamer: Meeting others in the dream state, including those who have passed over to the other side; Getting healings in dreams; Being taught by spiritual guides who know how to operate in the dream state; Exploring past lives or future events in your dreams; Finding enlightenment and profound divine love in dreams, and so forth. And all of this is presented with numerous first hand accounts to show how ordinary people are experiencing the joy of spiritual dreams. Stanley Krippner, Ph.D, one of the most respected dream researchers alive today, says in his endorsement of this book, "Some dreams create, some dreams heal, some dreams initiate; this remarkable book encompasses them all." Before I decided to compile this book, I personally read over 200 dream books ranging from trash to the very best out there. Except for an occasional historical reference or speculative chapter, these books were a starvation diet for anyone seeking the real meat of spiritual dreaming. Harold Klemp is the leader of ECKANKAR, a religious teaching which greatly values spiritual dreams. He presents dreams within the context of the ECKANKAR teachings, for these teachings illuminate much that is left unexplored elsewhere. His straight-forward and forthright presentation on the reality of spiritual dreams is not for everyone. Nor is his direct, folksy style. It will appear too simple for those looking for a complex psychological perspective. It will annoy a few readers that Klemp treats his subject in the context of a religious teaching. But for those who sense or know that dreams are the doorway into the heavenly worlds, this book will be a godsend.
