1.0 out of 5 stars Be Suspicious of these reviews
I have been reading books about dreams for years. When I saw this book here, and I saw the immense number of reviews of it, and the high percentage which were 5 star reviews, I ordered it.

I hate this book and found it so bad that I could not finish it.

When I returned today to write this review of it, I saw the review titled "Horrible" and wished it...

4.0 out of 5 stars Lowering the Volume, February 2, 2000

This review is from: The Art of Spiritual Dreaming (Paperback)
I had heard some good things about this book from people I know personally. But when I read some of the reviews posted on Amazon.com, I hesitated. At least two of the reviewers gave it one star and said AWFUL things about it and the author, whose other work they seemed to know and also hated. But they seemed focused on trashing, and I wondered if they had an ax to grind. (Why, one asks oneself, if they hated this author so much already, would they have bought and read this book at all?) Then there were one or two other reviews that gave 5 stars and rhapsodized on about the author and his background--almost as if they were personal friends of his. Then others of the reviews seemed non-hysterical and at least favorable. I wondered what all the commotion was about. Now that I've read the book myself, I can report that I have quite a favorable impression. No, this is not a scientifically structured book by dream researchers, which seemed to be one of the big objections of the outraged trashers. Instead, I'd say it's a bit more like "Conversations With God," or the works of Marianne Williamson, only with a dream orientation. If you're basically uncomfortable with the idea that God (or Spirit) exists and can speak to us or guide us, however subtly, through dreams, you may hate this book--because that is its unabashed premise. But if that idea is something you already believe and trust and are OK with, you may very well come to love this book and find in it a great deal of wisdom for self-development. Each chapter is broken down into a lot of subheadings that I found very easy to browse. And, there are many, MANY examples of ways that dreams can be interpreted intuitively to provide answers to problems and aid in personal spiritual growth. Scientific or not, this book had an authentic and honest feel to it in talking about dreams. I love dreams and dream study, and so did this author. I have strongly recommended it to friends who are interested in exploring dreams from a spiritual perspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dreams are the forgotten road to heaven., January 25, 2000

Joe Federico (Custer, Washington) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Art of Spiritual Dreaming (Paperback)
Harold Klemp's book explains that dreams are your gateway to the inner worlds. He than shares over 50 tips and spiritual exercises to show you how to understand, remember and use your dreams. If you follow the guidlines in the book, they do work. I told my cousin about the book who could almost never remember dreams and he was amazed that he started having vivid dream recall with a direct connection to everyday life. This is the best dream book out there! It gives you specific information on how to remember your dreams and actually do dream travel or soul travel. It is one of the best books I have ever read. I keep it by my bed and do a spiritual exercise before going to sleep. It is truly an adventure!

5.0 out of 5 stars The focus is on SPIRITUAL, January 29, 2000
This review is from: The Art of Spiritual Dreaming (Paperback)
I helped compile The Art of Spiritual Dreaming for the author Harold Klemp from his many talks and writings on the subject. My primary motive was to fill a certain gap in the public literature on dreams - that gap being represented by the word SPIRITUAL in the book's title. There are many books devoted to the interpretation of dreams, to dream work, to experimental research on dreams, to lucid dreaming, and so forth. Many are excellent. But they fall short on the subject of SPIRITUAL dreaming. Klemp's book is based on the premise that dreams are a portal into higher planes of reality, into the spiritual worlds. The book starts right off with the theme that the soul can and does leave the body during sleep, just as it will do permanently one day at the time of death. In these days where accounts of Near Death Experiences are commonplace, the idea of the soul leaving the body to visit higher worlds is a familiar idea to most people. Klemp elaborates on this theme, exploring the wondrous possibilities which this opens up for the dreamer: Meeting others in the dream state, including those who have passed over to the other side; Getting healings in dreams; Being taught by spiritual guides who know how to operate in the dream state; Exploring past lives or future events in your dreams; Finding enlightenment and profound divine love in dreams, and so forth. And all of this is presented with numerous first hand accounts to show how ordinary people are experiencing the joy of spiritual dreams. Stanley Krippner, Ph.D, one of the most respected dream researchers alive today, says in his endorsement of this book, "Some dreams create, some dreams heal, some dreams initiate; this remarkable book encompasses them all." Before I decided to compile this book, I personally read over 200 dream books ranging from trash to the very best out there. Except for an occasional historical reference or speculative chapter, these books were a starvation diet for anyone seeking the real meat of spiritual dreaming. Harold Klemp is the leader of ECKANKAR, a religious teaching which greatly values spiritual dreams. He presents dreams within the context of the ECKANKAR teachings, for these teachings illuminate much that is left unexplored elsewhere. His straight-forward and forthright presentation on the reality of spiritual dreams is not for everyone. Nor is his direct, folksy style. It will appear too simple for those looking for a complex psychological perspective. It will annoy a few readers that Klemp treats his subject in the context of a religious teaching. But for those who sense or know that dreams are the doorway into the heavenly worlds, this book will be a godsend.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the most thorough and comprehensive book on dreams., September 10, 1999
This review is from: The Art of Spiritual Dreaming (Paperback)
Harold Klemp's new book The Art of Spiritual Dreaming clearly demonstrates why he is considered one of the leading authorities in the world today on the spiritual nature of dreams.

Author Harold Klemp, makes three reassuring points to today's reader: 1) God loves you, 2) God speaks to you often, 3) You can learn to hear God's "voice" through the forgotten language of dreams. It goes beyond the ordinary dream book. It places spiritual dreaming in its rightful place at the center of the whole subject of dreams.

He goes on to explain there is an ancient tradition about the spiritual nature of dreams. The Old Testament gives examples of dreams and waking visions, affirming these as ways that God provides personal direction and guidance.

Author Harold Klemp has been at the forefront of the trend toward exploring the spiritual nature of dreams for the last decade and a half. His view holds that dreams are of divine origin. They are a portal to spiritual worlds and bear messages and prophetic insights from God.

So what is spiritual dreaming? "Dreams are like a daily report card," says Klemp, "They show how you are doing in your spiritual mission, even if you don't know you have one. Dreams tell how you are getting on in your relationship with God and life.

In The Art of Spiritual Dreaming, Harold Klemp reaffirms that dreams are a divine gift. He offers readers of all faiths and backgrounds proven techniques to assist them in using dreams to discover spiritual meaning and purpose in life."

Harold Klemp-the spiritual leader of Eckankar, Religion of the Light and Sound of God-is one of the foremost advocates of spiritual dreaming in the world today. He draws upon his own insights and experiences, as well as those of many other spiritual dreamers whose personal adventures fill the pages of his new book.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone new or familiar with the significance of dream study. It is the most thorough and comprehensive book I have ever read on dreams. A must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Takes dreaming and dreamers to a whole new and higher level., October 27, 1999
By
This review is from: The Art of Spiritual Dreaming (Paperback)
If you're serious about understanding your dreams, take a look at The Art of Spiritual Dreaming by Harold Klemp. Klemp takes dreams and dreamers to a whole new and higher level. On page 36, he says about dreams, "They are your experiences of life in greater worlds." Then he goes on to give examples of this throughout the book.

I have been having immediate and positive results as a result of reading this book. His techniques are simple and effective. I highly recommend this book to anyone who really wants to know what dreams are all about, and to those who want to gain more from their dream experiences. This book is destined to become a spiritual classic.

I also liked that he said animals are Souls and that they can have these same kinds of spiritual experiences.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good technique for dream recall, but heavy on the ECK agenda, October 7, 2003
This review is from: The Art of Spiritual Dreaming (Paperback)
This book draws heavily on the teachings of Eckankar. It is, in fact, put out by their press, and takes most of its case histories from ECK practitioners. Clearly, the book is intended to lead people to practice ECK. As I am not a practitioner of that Path, I cannot evaluate it in those terms. I will say, however, that it has some excellent techniques for developing your "dream memory," learning from your dreams, soul travel, meeting spiritual masters in dreams, fending off psychic attacks, etc. -- if you are able to translate the ubiquitous references to ECK into those of your own religion or Path. (For example, instead of chanting "Hu" as the ECK people do, I chant Hebrew mantras.) The book also includes some material on understanding past-life dreams, which is probably why I received a review copy (I have written three books on reincarnation, all available here in Amazon). For those who practice ECK or one of the Eastern or New Age philosophies, this would be a most helpful book. For myself, I prefer something more theologically neutral.

Harold Klemp rights in a simple and straight forward fashion. Very easy reading. Despite this, the book is packed with insights on dreams and how to use them. Many spiritual techniques are given that enables one to learn how to use dreams effectively, and yet this book is not small, right at about 300 pages. Excellent value for dream students, this is a book to keep by the bedside for frequent reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Have an open mind., July 27, 2000
This review is from: The Art of Spiritual Dreaming (Paperback)
I have been interested in dream interpretation since I was very young, and have read many books on the subject. This one is the best one I have read, by far. It goes beyond simple symbology which can become muddled and superficial, and shows you how you can take part in your dreams and use them for the betterment of your own life, spiritually and physically.

One thing that is important to know before buying this book is that it's based on ancient teachings that have been gathered into a religion called Eckankar. Those who have no tolerance for broader ways of looking at spirituality will probably be quick to attack this book. Alternate ways of thinking can be scary to some, but Eckankar is a completely valid religion once a person is ready and able to explore ideas they are not used to. Those who are already interested in Eckankar, especially the dream concepts of the religion, will most likely enjoy this book. It is a good introduction to Eckankar, especially hand in hand with the small book, "ECKANKAR- Ancient Wisdom for today".
