More About the Author

It is always interesting to be asked to "share a bit about yourself." When you are in your fifties, there's quite a bit to choose from!

What I want to share here and now is simply this: I believe that each person has gifts to share with the world. One of my gifts is a love for stories - listening to them, learning from them, creating stories with people, telling and writing them and living to make more.

When I was very young, I was given a Tom Thumb toy typewriter for Christmas. The moment I hit the keys and saw the printed word on the page, I knew I wanted to write a book someday. There were also arts and crafts influences in my childhood that inspired me to want to be an artist. The road was winding, long, unconventional and all mine. It was a process that jump started in 1993 with three rubber stamps, an idea, and the determination to take a dream and make it reality. My art business ImpressionsArt Designs was born.

Another decision became very clear at one point during my art business years: before turning 50, I was going to write a book, and so I did it. In order to get it published before wasting years getting turned down by the big publishers and wanting to see in print before turning 90, I self-published Holy Moly Mackeroly! That was a major commitment and risk, one that I never regretted. The book is all stories, an art-business memoir that I love for its honesty and for the ripple effects that I never could have imagined possible - this book changed my life and other lives, too.

A natural progression came soon after that - the opportunity to write another book, this one filled with artwork and crammed with as much fun and encouragement as I could pack into 128 pages! North Light Books offered me a contract, and Art Stamping Workshop is now available. It is an exciting time!

My favorite title is "Mom." My favorite way of life is to be free to be myself, to look for and open the next door.

What's next? ...this story to be continued...

5.0 out of 5 stars A FABULOUS book from Gloria Page!, January 13, 2006
Kudos to Gloria Page for sharing her talents with us. She is an extraordinary mixed-media artist and I have been a huge fan of her handcarved stamp designs for years. Her new book is not only a stunning showcase of her artwork, but a practical guide to carving your own stamping tools for use on paper, cloth, clay, and more.
Reading the introduction, I was immediately pulled into the text. Gloria's friendly, engaging style of writing takes all the fear out of creating your own imagery for stamping. She then provides five pages of practical advice on finding ispiration for your images. This is followed by a thorough discusson of the tools and materials needed -- everything from linoleum blocks and rubbery soft printing blocks to wood, brayer rollers that can be carved, and all the other items you'll need such as inks, paints, carving tools, etc.
This section is followed by an amazing 18 pages detailing how to carve your images and stamp or print with them successfully. Many different techniques are offered; even carving with a Dremel.®
Finally on page 41 we enter the projects, which are divided into sections: stamping on paper, fabric, and alternative surfaces. Altogether 20 beautiful projects are stepped out in detail. And in case you were wondering, yes, Gloria provides templates for 40 great stamp images that you can photocopy and use in your artwork. She also provides a gallery of more advanced artwork from some of the biggest names in this genre, from Sue Nan Douglass to Julie Hagan Bloch. Wonderful!
Highly recommended by Sharilyn Miller, author of Bead on a Wire.

this book is awesome! i purchase this book thinking that i would like only the projects as the idea of carving my own stamps did not appeal to me. WRONG--i had just started looking at the carving technique ms. page reviews and i picked up a piece of rubber and within 30 minutes had 2 of my own stamps carved quite well! she reads like she speaks and the photos and step by step instructions are easy to follow. the projects are beautiful and i look forward to carving for many a year. highly recommend this book to all crafters of any type who want to put there personal stamp on their work!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE book for stamp carving!, June 27, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
If you are interested in learning how to carve your own art rubber stamps then you need this book as well as The Weekend Crafter:Rubber stamp carving.

Both books provide clear cut instructions on how to carve your own stamps to make artistic and fun stamps that are one of a kind. But this book is much better of the two and I'd suggest this one if you can only buy one book on the subject of stamp carving.
The projects in this book are lovely, artistic and not cutesy or cookie cutter similar to everything out there. You will easily be able to begin carving right away with this book alone. Well worth the 15 bucks here on Amazon! I recommend it.
5 stars!
