Theory meets practice.,
By
This review is from: The Art of Styling Sentences (Paperback)
Chapter one covers sentence parts briefly and is useful for anyone who needs a brief grammar refresher. Then the authors explore twenty sentence patterns, including several variations. What I liked most in this book is that after each pattern you will find explanations, examples (including professional samples) and exercises. Pattern layout is simple but effective and will allow you to write almost any sentence in English. All you need to do is to apply these styling patterns to your own sentences.

Great tips on styling sentences.,

This review is from: The Art of Styling Sentences (Paperback)
A great book on sentence variety. Examples of stunning sentences. Not a book to be overlooked. A must-have for any aspiring writer or student.
This book is the one I most consult on sentence variety. From much use, mine has gone dog-eared and well-thumbed. If you love this book, then you will really love the other books, those of the below: The first three MUST-SEE books by by Don Killgallon. 1. "Sentence Composing for High School: A Worktext on Sentence Variety and Maturity." 2. "Sentence Composing for College: A Worktext on Sentence Variety and Maturity" 3. "Grammar for High School: A Sentence-Composing Approach" All these first three books above are the must-haves for all aspiring writers and students. They all teach sentence variety and has examples of stunning sentences. Also, get this book below. 4. "Sentence Combining: A Composing Book" by William Strong. A lovely, charming book with lively examples of sentences. Great exercises for brainstorming - sentence-composing helps combat any Writer's Block as it did for me. I often bring this lightweight book with me into cafes. Great readings with my teas and lattes.

Kindle version needs a better TOC!,
By
This review is from: The Art of Styling Sentences (Kindle Edition)
I have the print version and use it as an exercise tool for creating poetic structures based on different sentence patterns. I decided it would be useful to have the Kindle version as a ready reference. Big mistake. The TOC does not list the patterns beyond number 3~navigation is such a headache. Also the graphics are pale gray and difficult to read. This is an example of a shoddy Kindle conversion.

Spruce up your writing,
By
This review is from: The Art of Styling Sentences (Paperback)
Varying your sentence styles can make flat writing come alive. It's easy to fall into the rut of subject, verb, subject, verb. Flipping these things around, adding descriptors; it all makes for more interesting prose. This is a real nuts-and-bolts book with lots of exercises to improve your writing. But I took away a good appreciation for the need to vary style as I write. Many people will likely read this book as part of a writing class. But I picked it up simply looking for ways to improve my prose style.

Wonderful little book that changed the way I wrote,
By Eric Lu (CA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Art of Styling Sentences (Paperback)
I am not a native speaker but I have learned enough English that I eventually made it to two of the top universities in the United States. And although I am not a master of writing, I have often been told by my professors that I write very clearly. And if I must think of a book that fundamentally changed the way I write, it is this little book that I read about ten years ago. This little gem presents several patterns of writing that one does not come across often enough, yet they are from time to time extremely useful and even powerful. And the patterns I learned from this book have certainly helped with my college application essays. With such a low price tag, I would recommend it to any of my friends who want to improve their writing.

"Thought is the blossom; language, the bud; action, the fruit." (Emerson)
Having taken no previous thought to sentence style, I was thrilled with the lessons in this book; my writing has greatly improved. Consider the book's example of sentence pattern number eight: "Because it may seem difficult at first, because it may sound awkward or forced, because it often creates lengthy sentences where the thought 'gets lost,' this pattern seems forbidding to some writers, but it isn't all that hard; try it." I've since used that pattern in my own nonfiction book.

This book is genius,
By
This review is from: The Art of Styling Sentences (Paperback)
I am writing my first book; and it's far more challenging than I ever thought it might be. Making it even more difficult: English is my second language. So I set out to look for copywriting tips and writing tips. By accident I came across this book and it is a real eye opener. After 20 years of english finally something that explains how-to structure sentences. How could my teachers miss this??
In this book are 20 patterns laid out. Now I see these patterns everywhere. Just any book I open, authors all over seem to have a feast with these patterns. Sometimes it looks like a game, these patterns as the only thing that keeps these authors writing and interested in their own work. It's crazy. A real eye opener. The book could have more examples though. It has many, many very detailed; but as I'm a novice writer I need more. Much more.

Makes a sinch of syntax,
By
This review is from: The Art of Styling Sentences (Paperback)
This is an essential reference for anyone who wants to improve the quality of their writing. The reader is given thorough instruction on how to construct better sentences block by block; each sentence pattern is illustrated by easy to understand grammatical symbols and examples, both professional and generic, are given to demonstrate the use of the pattern. By far, this is my most utilized book on grammar and syntax; it's certainly indispensable. Doubtless, every high school and college student should have this reference book not in their library but in their backpacks at all times.

I hate other verbose grammar and style books. This one is well written with high skim value. Excellent examples and examples from famous sources. These tools will add value to all of your writing. There are blank spaces for exercises which I highly recommend that you complete.
