Book Description

September 1, 1999
A book written by a temp who loves the temp life. Not a "survival manual"; rather the words of a mentor with years of experience who knows how to make your desire (or need) for flexibility and freedom work for you. With a simple attitude adjustment, you can enjoy your time as a temp, be it short- or long-term. Though she encourages you to take advantage of any opportunity to hone your skills, Molly believes that the single most important characteristic of a successful temp is attitude, with skills and experience almost secondary. This book --- not a heavy read (no Braverman theorem here) --- can transform the way one views oneself as a temp. Examples: "Your courage and freedom is something the corporately co-opted can never understand." or "Your genius is that you can do their job." or "Everyone's temporary." In a simple format with pen-and-ink illustrations, the attitude is the message. Written for clerical temps (63% of all temporaries) to help "preserve your spirit", it includes a helpful checklist of questions to ask before you report to work as receptionist, some ethics, safety and performance tips and an eclectic and arcane list of resources. Sam Sacco, of the National Association of Temporary and Staffing Services (NATSS), said "Temporary work is not for everyone. It's all in the attitude." This book says "They'll never know how good you really are." .and so what?

Editorial Reviews

Review

This book should have been written years ago! But I guess temping is like menopause - nobody talks about it even though half the population will experience it at some point in their lives. -- Nancy Orban, former temp and temp agency owner

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read!!, December 5, 2001

I have recently read this book and thought it to be very insightful. What a pleasure it would be to have a temp who knew all of these little secrets to making the best of a temporary situation. All Admin Assistants should also read this book to make your situation a little better and you will be more appreciated!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a full sized book, more of a "quick tips" guide, November 15, 2001

After reading the reviews above I was looking forward to settling in with a nice hot beverage and absorbing wisdom after a long, hard day of temping. Well last night this book arrived and I tore it open with eager anticipation to find basically a bunch of Post-It notes bound together and sold as a book.

The author does have a few positive and helpful hints--such as a checklist for receptionists, but caveat emptor: each page is either a one line comment or a badly drawn sketch of women golfing or a maze or something equally out of place. Most of the "insights" are truly lame, i.e. "Pamper yourself by bringing antique chopsticks if eating Chinese" or "Wardobe: black/brown/red/grey suits etc. and several linen shirts in the finest fabrics, of course" (paraphrase as the book is at home but you get the idea.)

Overall given her background the author could have provided a much more substantive read with real advice for temps or those considering temping. What she delivers is a cutesy little flip-through guide that takes 5 minutes to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book everyone employed should read, September 21, 2000

I am a nurse but happened to read Molly's book in a friend's car. I recently took a new part time job and was thrown into a work situation in which I knew very little and would be constantly moved around the facility. I got through the first day telling myself things from this book like: "they will never give you enough information" "Do your best because why not" I went back and reread the book. Even though I am a nurse, I was a temp and found the book not only helpful but inspiring. In today's world, secretaries are not the only temps. - we almost all are!
