Book Description

This book shows "how to think about doing" art therapy, rather than "how to do" art therapy. It presents the general "understandings" necessary for effective art therapy for any age level, in any setting, and in any modality. An excellent text.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The Art of Art Therapy is renewed and significantly advanced by this revised edition, a text that is aligned with the whole spectrum of theory and practice. Rubin, a historic and current leader in the field, holds the complexities of art therapy and presents the discipline in an accessible way, modeling the thoughtfulness and creativity that she encourages when working with others.” - Shaun McNiff, Lesley University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA

“Clear, accessible, and informative, The Art of Art Therapy illuminates the process of art therapy.   Its influence will extend to a whole new generation of practitioners and students, who will find a wealth of knowledge within its pages.” - Joy Schaverien, Jungian Analyst, UK

"Dr. Rubin connects with the needs and questions of readers encountering art therapy for the first time, or revisiting it with new inquiries about its essential, enduring elements. She sorts out the common threads of the field’s many developments since the first publication of her classic text and guides the reader further into well-grounded, responsible practice.” - Lynn Kapitan, Mount Mary College, USA

“Judith Rubin describes the core features of art therapy practice. Her straightforward, lucid style of writing serves to illuminate the timeless principles and practices of the effective art therapist. Deceptively simple in approach, the book mines the richness of the field to reveal its essence.” - Catherine Hyland Moon, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, USA

4.0 out of 5 stars A good source book for studying the field of art therapy, March 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Art of Art Therapy: What Every Art Therapist Needs to Know (Hardcover)
A great source for learning more about the application of art therapy. As a graduate student, I found this book indespensible for learning about my field and writing my thesis. I would recommend this book to anyone interested practicing art therapy as a proffesion.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too basic to be what "every art therapist needs to know", July 18, 2011
This is a well-written book, but if you are an advanced professional or even a graduate student, just read it at the library. The well known author Rubin has again put together a book that is very basic and easily readable. But the total feeling of this book is rather flat. It also feels as if she is writing for a very young audience, perhaps high school age or young adults.

I imagined when I purchased this volume that I would be reading some detailed cases as the author is a graduate of many fine schools and trainings. But that experience does not come through and I do not think I can recommend this one to graduate students at university level.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Art of Art Therapy, June 5, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book has it all for the new and beginning art therapist. A great review to those who are already in the profession, and it has unique outlooks on problems a therapist may encounter.
