Book Description

September 15, 1997 1853433683 978-1853433689
The term "art therapy" was coined when it was recognized that painting, drawing and modelling had healing effects on people. The early practitioners saw themselves as facilitators in setting free a spontaneous inaginative activity. In this text the author makes a plea for the therapist to return to a trust in the therapeutic value of the creative process itself. Drawing on her memories of working with some of the pioneers of art therapy, and on her own experience as a painter and as an art therapy practitionar, her argument surfaces through observation, speculation, case history and quotations from artists, poets and analysts.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A work of great thought and learning; one which encouraged me to think about and explore further the insights she offers into the creative process." Mental Health Care March 1998 vol1 no 7 -- Mental Health Care March 1998 vol1 no 7

"Thomson's colourful and descriptive style of writing brings the text to life... (she) sets out in an unassuming, reflective, often gently humourous way to cover an enormous amount in this slim volume and succeeds in giving a comprehensive overview." Counselling News -- Counselling News

'All through the book there are sentences and images that made me want to throw my hat in the air ... Don't underestimate it. The tone is modest, but it is honest.'

Seamus Heaney -- Seamus Heaney
