Tie-dyeing in action!,
This review is from: The Art of Tie-Dye (DVD)
There are many books and web sites on the subject of tie-dyeing, but none of them can teach you how to do it as well as actually watching. In this DVD, Michael Fowler demonstrates exactly how to fold fabric for tie-dyeing in many different ways, including mandalas, earths, kaleidoscope, stars, spirals, lightning bolts, chaos, and more. He also gives exact details of recipes that work, using Procion MX dye, and discusses the advantages of both fiber reactive dyeing and pigment "dyeing" with paint, for different purposes.

The Best Tie-dye Resource!,
This review is from: The Art of Tie-Dye (DVD)
Whether you are a beginner or a professional tie-dyer, this DVD has loads of great information. From the ubiquitous spiral to esoteric mandalas, Michael Fowler clearly demonstrates techniques that will help bring your tie-dyes up several notches. I have searched print sources and the Internet for this kind of information without success until now. Furthermore, the DVD nudges you to explore your own combinations using his folds as building blocks. The fast paced presentation will also help you explore color combinations that you probably not considered before. I have viewed The Art of Tie-dye repeatedly, each time picking up something new. I can't believe some of the creations I have made since viewing this DVD!

Inspiring. Michael Fowler shares his dye recipes and patterns for tieing in an easy to follow format. The end results are beautiful. A beginner could feel confident of great results following these instructions. I have been dyeing fabric for a few years now, and still felt I learned from this, and was inspired by his use of color and patterns. The editing is a bit choppy in a few places, but overall the DVD is fun to watch as well as informative.

The ultimate Tie-Dye resource,

This review is from: The Art of Tie-Dye (DVD)
This is it, what every tie-dyer has waited for. You've spent years trying to figure out the folds of that really cool mandala tapestry you saw in the parking lot at that Grateful Dead concert, and still all you end up with is a blob.
Never fear, Michael Fowler has spent those years in active persuit of the tie dye dream, and now he delivers it to you, lock stock and barrel. Mike takes you from the very beginning, literally holding your hand as you take those first steps into a world of color. he takes you from the basic to advanced, and covers everything from dye preparation, to washing the final product. He shows you how to take his folds and springboard off of them, so that your final product is unique, and individual. He presents all of this in a an organized fashion, and he leaves nothing out. That's right, while most tie-dyers are secretive about their process, Mike is taking the high road here, and showing all the little "secrets" that, up to now, have been very well kept. I personally have read almost every book there is on tie-dying out there, and none of them even come close to what this DVD does, it will teach you what you need to know to dye beautifully, and creatively. Final word, if tie-dye is in your life, you need this dvd. 'nuff said, go buy it.

The greatest aspect of this DVD is that it covers a lot of ground but has enough repetition to in for retention purposes in it too. There is more to this than instruction and it truly gives a sense of how tie-dying works.
The one downside we (as we watched this as a family) is that it would have nice to have seen the final products prior to doing the particular fold pattern that he was doing. It was not until the very end, when he removes the final product from the dryer, did we see how the pattern turns out. I think it would helped reinforce the folding and dying process to what the creator has in mind. But, overall, the DVD is a pleasure to watch as he moves with such effortlessness when he makes his art. One gets a sense from watching it that the entire family could join in and do it.

This dvd is the best instruction on tie dye I have seen to date. I have 2 other vcr tapes and Michael's dvd is beyond words. He has easy to follow instructions. Any one can follow them. This is an exceptional dvd. He put a wealth of information in it for the beginner tie dyer "secrets" that are difficult to find. There are not many tie dyers that will reveal the way to do different designs. Now any one can tie dye.

As a newbie and someone who is only doing tie-dye for fun I found the DVD a little lacking. I had to search thru to find the recipe for the dye mix (there was some recipes given)
The folding on the DVD was superb - but a sample of what each would look like after it was folded would have helped. Guess I was expecting alot more as it didn't really give much more than what is on the website. Still if you are into doing some of the fancy folds you might like the DVD. |
